The Lost Sword

A two-handed sword, or claymore, formerly belonging to MacDonnel of Morar, was given to the Maclaine family over a hundred years ago. The sword is quite unusual because it is most likely taller than the average man of that time. The sword had been carried by a MacDonnel at the unfurling of Prince Edward Stuart's standard at Glenfinna on August 19, 1745. It was borne in Scotland and England while following the fortunes of the Prince, and was wielded with effect in the various battles, ending at Culloden. The sword was carried back to safety to Dalily, on the family estate in Invernesshire. It was presented by Eneas MacDonnel of Morar to Captain Murdoch Gillean Maclaine, 23rd of Lochbuie in 1885. It was later sold by one of the Lochbuie heirs. The present whereabouts of the sword is unknown, but it is thought to be in the U.S.A.
