The Interrogation

I looked over to the silent partner, hoping that she could interject something that I could comprehend, something which might give me an idea of where this conversation was going. She only looked back at me with her cold eyes which seemed to be nothing more than white circles in the upper half of her shadowed face. I took a deep breath, realizing that I was on my own in this demented game of baiting, fully aware that I was the catch of the day.

"Yes, that is true. At the time I did not know if I was a lesbian or not."

"So, if you were so unsure then, what makes you so sure now that you are a lesbian?"

"Well, I've grown up. I've faced my feelings, accepted who I am."

"But you were unable to do that when you were 14?"

"Yes, that's right."

"How about when you were 15? 16? 17? 18? 19? 20?"

"I don't know. I guess the time was just not right yet for me to face that part of myself."

"How about when you were 18? 19? 20? Was it still so hard for you to face 'that part of yourself' then?"

"Yes, it was. Coming out to myself was the hardest thing that I've ever had to do. I guess I needed to wait until a time in my life when I could deal with such a major change in my self identity."

"And that time came in December of 1993?"

"Yeah, I guess so."

"You guess so? Did you or did you not come out as a lesbian in December of 1993?"

"Yes, I did."

"And what did you think about the fact that you had dated men prior to that time when you came out to yourself?"

"I thought....I don't know what I thought. I guess I didn't think too much about it really."

"You didn't think about it much?"

"No, I guess not. I mean, I was more excited and scared about my newly realized identity to worry about stuff that didn't matter anymore."
