Latex allergy is a sensitivity reaction caused by exposure to the proteins present in latex rubber.  Reactions differ by individual but range from urticaria, mucus membrane swelling, watery eyes to respiratory distress and anaphylaxis. Latex sensitivity/allergy can lead to life threatening complications for patients unless we know what to avoid

Patients who should be treated in a latex-safe environment AT ALL TIMES include:

  • Those with a known allergy to latex
  • Those who have a reaction to contact with rubber products (rubber bands, balloons etc.)
  • Those who have an unexplained reaction during surgery,  dental or rectal exam.

Patients who have a high potential risk of developing a latex allergy and should be treated in a latex-safe environment include:

  • Those with spina bifida
  • Those with more than 5 surgeries at a young age
  • Those with occupational exposure to Latex
  • Those with food allergies to bananas, water chestnuts or Kiwi
