BIOGRAPHY - MARGARET TENA (MACDONALD) AND ALBAN BERTRAM MACADAM (Written by: Mary (MacAdam) Palmer - daughter of Alban & Tena MacAdam, July 2003) TENA Margaret Clementena (Tena) MacDonald was born on July 7, 1896 in Maple Hill, P.E.I. Her parents were James A. (Jimmy) MacDonald and Margaret MacDonald. She was married on February 8, 1916 to Alban Bertram MacAdam at St. Andrew's Church, St. Andrew, P.E.I. They have 53 grandchildren - Debby Schlitt is the oldest and Michael Palmer is the youngest. They also have 87 Great grandchildren and 4 Great, Great grandchildren (as of the 2003 Reunion). My mother was a wonderful person and she had an awesome faith. She didn't preach it, she lived it. She was a loving and caring mom and had the patience of Job. She gave birth to 12 children: 8 boys and 4 girls. I never heard her raise her voice in my life. She worked day in and day out and we always had home-cooked meals. Our house was an open-house - everyone gathered there for get-togethers and sing-songs and everyone felt welcome there! She always served up a lunch for visitors. No one left our place without, at least, a cup of tea! She was never too busy to enjoy a visit from family or friends. She was a slim, classy, and stylish lady - even after 12 children! She always wore a hat to Sunday Mass and on special occassions. She enjoyed music, especially The Juliette Show on T.V. In earlier years, she liked to sew, make quilts, and hook mats. She also looked forward to a game of cards. (Click here to view 1916 wedding article in the P.E.I. Guardian newspaper about Tena & Alban) ALBAN Alban Bertram MacAdam was born on November 8, 1887 in West St. Peter's, P.E.I., and was the son of John Joe MacAdam and Mary (Minnie) MacDonald. He was a wonderful father who worked very hard as a fisherman. It was a dangerous job, especially when he would be out in his boat in the roaring waves of the sea. He didn't have any fear of it; quite the opposite. It was a challenge for him! He had a great sense of humour and he often told many stories about his younger years. He and his buddies played many a trick on people. They were characters. Occasionally he would take part in local plays. At those times, he often would "ad lib" his lines, much to the surprise of the others in the play. He was handy around the house when it came to fixing things, etc. Mom could convince him to do anything. He would say he couldn't do a particular job, but, he always obliged. For example, building a corner cabinet in the dining room or changing the hallway door or other requests from mom. He also helped his sons build their new homes. He enjoyed hockey games. He would take in games at the Morell rink and, sometimes, in Souris. The Souris team and the Morell Dreadnoughts were extreme rivals. He also enjoyed watching wrestling on T.V. with a box of peanut brittle beside him. One night, I phoned home when we lived in Halifax. After a chat with him, I asked when he and mom were coming over for a visit. He replied, "Well, it won't be tonight..." Such wit! Oh! Yes, evening rosary was a must at home. Our parents were great citizens and very much involved in the church and community. They left an awesome legacy. Thanks mom and dad. |
