Day 3 - Cairns
We flew up to Cairns on Virgin Blue airlines ... i'm not all that hip on them. I won't go into details, but the crew stunk! Anyhoo, the first day in Cairns we took a trip up to Karunda. It was a gold mining camp many a year ago, and there was a big undertaking in getting the railroad built from Cairns to Karunda. It has a remarkable history, but today it is simply a tourist trap. This is a picture of the head of the train as we went around a 180 degree turn.
We stopped at Barron Falls (on the Barron River) and had a peak. We were told that during the rainy season a tremendous amount of water comes over these falls. If you stop by Josh and Jessica Smith's place, they have a postcard of what it's like in the rainy season!
Of course Susie had to display the typical "i'm getting on the train" pose. The people are who we sat by ... i can't remember their names, but they are Aussies who now live in Michigan - go Wolverines!
On the ride down, we rode at tree-top-level over the rain forrest in these cable cars. It was an awesome trip down. I wish we had a better shot of how far it was down to the forrest floor. I'm guessing it was 120 feet, but i'm not sure. We didn't really seen any thing but birds, but we got a close view of two Wedge-Tailed Eagles.
