| Author’s introduction:
There are certain periods in a person’s life that I consider magical
years. Transitional years, ending one stage in your life and moving into
another. A lot of growing up happens in those ages. You learn and experience
a lot, both good and bad. Those years are scary, fun and exciting, all
at once. Twelve was one of those ages for me. Another one was seventeen.
For me, it seemed like the second I turned seventeen, everyone I encountered
asked me where I was going to college, what my major was going to be, what
I wanted to do with the rest of my life. All that pressure I was receiving
to grow up and be an adult was really stressful. All I wanted to do was
go to football games and concerts and be a normal teenage girl. Anyway,
that’s why this period in a person’s life really fascinates me. So much
is happening at that period, I think its important to bring those issues
forward and discuss them. Then, last night, I realized two of my favorite
songs are written about that time, “Seventeen” by Tim McGraw and “17” by
Mandy Moore. These songs shed incredible incite on this age by both a male
and female perspective. In creating this story, I plan on using these songs
as basis for a story written from the viewpoints of two seventeen-year-olds,
Nick Carter and Kelly Anne Roberts, as they experience their first love
(and much more) over the course of a summer.
