Thyroid: Follicular adenoma

 

 

 

 

 

A well-circumscribed brownish fleshy mass was seen in surgical removal of the thyroid.  The rest of the gland was normal.

 

1.    Why is this section abnormal?  Describe the abnormal histological features.

 

Circumscribed nodule lying within normal thyroid tissue

Capsulated with a lot of follicles containing colloid, some colloid more eosinophilic than the rest

Follicles are of varying sizes

Benign looking acinar cells (normal nuclei)
