Moses Rintel Information on Simeon Solomons found in 'The Scarlet Thread, Australia's Jack the Ripper. A true crime story'. by Maurice Gurvich and Christopher Wray. Simeon Solomons was involved in the trial of Frederick Bailey Deeming, alias Albert Williams. Deeming arrived in Melbourne with his wife Emily in 1891. A carrier was hired to take their possessions to their new house in Windsor. Deemimg, who had given his name as Williams travelled with his canary on the cart while Emily was told to make her own way by tram. On the very same day Deeming also purchased cement, tools and a pan from an ironmonger. Emily was murdered by her husband soon after. Her naked body was discovered with a fractured skull and cut throat under the hearthstone in their house in Windsor. The police discovered that the man known to them as Albert Williams also went by the name Frederick Bailey Deeming, and they were soon able to expose the many other aliases under which he operated - Duncan, Drewn, Dobson, Harry Dawson, and Watson. By finding out that Williams was Deeming, the police learned that he had previously lived in Sydney, Australia in the 1880's with another wife, Marie, and their four children. This family were later all found murdered back in England, the remains of this family entombed in concrete under the floorboards. In 1887 Deeming was convicted of larceny and declared bankrupt, so it was not surprising that in 1891 he had returned to Australia using a new name. Under the name Harry Dawson, Deeming arranged to sell his goods by auction. Among those items for auction were a broom, spade, trowel, claw hammer and a brass cage. He used yet another name, Watson, to rent an empty office at 348 Little Bourke Street where the auction was held on 7 January. Williams had valued the canary and its ornate brass cage at 30 pounds. Simeon Solomons, a dealer of La Trobe Street, City, was able to secure the canary and its cage for 3 pound. After Simeon Solomons purchased the canary, the owner who he knew by the alias of Dawson, gave him a packet of bird seed and asked him to look after the bird. The cage was distinctively ornate and proved very useful in confirming that Dawson was actually Williams and thus Deeming. Deeming, who still went under the name Williams was arrested for the murder of two wives and four children. He was extradited from Western Australia to Melbourne and on the day of the trial as he had been held in an outside courtyard for several hours he was in a foul mood and was extremely enraged. Simeon Solomons had to testify that the man arrested was indeed the same one who had sold him the birdcage. As Williams (Deeming) was escorted through the throng of onlookers by a detective and two constables he saw Simeon Solomons who had purchased the caged canary, and whose evidence had helped to identify him. Deeming's left arm was free and he took the opportunity to land a heavy blow to Mr Solomons face. (John Wood, the ironmonger who was waiting to give evidence was also the object of Deeming's fury, but managed to duck a punch aimed at him.) On the 6th day of the inquest which had began on 1 April 1892, Simeon Solomons was called to identify the canary and cage. At the conclusion of his evidence, the coroner asked his solicitor Marshall Lyle, if he had any questions for the witness. Deeming called out, 'ask him how his eye is' an obvious allusion to his assault upon Solomons the preceding day. This interjection caused more laughter in court. When Solomons was called to identify the canary and cage which he had purchased from Deeming, The Australasian reported that 'the canary, which had sung blithely throughout the inquest, now sat sullen and silent'. It had been injured the day before the hearing when one of its wings was caught in the bars of the cage. In court, Deemimg contended that a venereal disease he had contracted during his many voyages had caused him to have epileptic seizures and brain disease which caused him to kill. In court, he angrily stated to the jury that the press had unfairly sealed his fate. Later, he stated that those present in the courtroom were "the ugliest race of people I've ever seen." The jury took little more than an hour to find him guilty, and Deeming was hanged on Monday May 23rd, 1892. Robert Sheezel located the 'Obituary of Simeon Solomons' in the 17 June 1892 edition of The Jewish Herald. "It is with much regret that we have to record the death of a well-known citizen in the person of Mr Simeon Solomons, a colonist of nearly forty years, whose well known figure amongst business people of this city will be much missed. Mr Solomons was a great expert in matters pertaining to the purchase and sale of art objects and bric-a-brac, and many private and public galleries owe much to the keen judgement of the late gentleman for the precious stores they contain. Mr Solomons was kind-hearted and generous, and did many a quiet act of charity.'
