Annotation: Critical ideas and themes

Monolith

The monolith is the central symbol in 2001. It represents, in the simplest terms, the force behind Man's evolution. It stirs Man's curiosity and changes him into a thinking being. As Heywood Floyd puts it, "Its origin and purpose are completely unknown" -- but its effects on mankind are at the core of 2001.

Alignment

The alignment of the celestial heavens occurs three times in 2001, when Man comes in contact with the monolith. They symbolically mirror Man's own evolving perfection.

Self-destruction

It is in the nature of Mankind in 2001 to be in danger of destroying itself with the double edged sword of technology. Man is either abusing his knowledge or being abused by it. The struggle to evolve beyond this is central to 2001.

Vitality

2001 shows Man's vitality in as much danger as he himself is, for the same reasons. Only when Man, personified by Bowman, regains his vitality and control can he evolve into a higher being.

Emotionlessness

The lack of emotion shown by the people in 2001 coincides with the loss of their vitality. They are cold and lifeless because they have lost control to technology, and with it, the ability to hate, or to rejoice.

David Bowman

David Bowman represents in all aspects a man who is ready to take the next evolutionary step. He possesses creative power (sketches) and emotion (mercy and rage towards HAL). He also shows he can retake the power that Man had given to his tools, and does so through intuition and courage, not cold logic. For proving himself, he finds a Monolith and evolves into the Star-Child. 2001.

Technology

Technology is the hidden antagonist in 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is technology which allows man to kill others. Over time, technology has also removed the need for emotion and vitality in humans, by insulating them and acting for them. HAL is the penultimate technology, and it is through him that its malevolence is fully expressed. Only when Man has cast away his technology and regained control can he evolve.
