Alliance Fire Company is the 2009 LVUSPL Playoff Champs!!!

News, Notes, & Other Bullshit:
Greetings, gang. The 2009 edition of the LVUSPL has now come to an end.
Just to recap:

Division Winners
Division 1 Alliance Fire Company
Division 2 Mad Bombers
Division 3 PA Eye Care

Tournament Winners
1st place Black Sox
2nd place PA Eye Care
3rd place Leather Corner Post

Playoff Winners
Playoff Champs Alliance Fire Co
Playoff Runner Up PA Eye Care

Of special note:
This is the first year I can remember since weve been using the 3 division format that two teams from Division 3 have gone to the post season and the first time that a Division 3 team has gone to the finals. Congrats to PA Eye Care for being the only team to take 3 trophies this year

Concerning the league finances although Barry is currently out of state I seem to recall him telling me that we do have somewhat of a surplus this year. If this is the case I would like to propose sending a $50 gift certificate (or something of that effect) to Robin Stemetzki of County. Although County did seem to bone us quite a bit this year this was not Robins doing but rather Bob Stiffler head of Parks and Rec. As a matter of fact, Robin often went above and beyond to ensure that we got fields as needed, and was constantly apologizing profusely. (Hey Buddy profusely means a lot.) And besides theres nothing like a little bribe to help us out for next year

Moving right along I need to hear if everyone is returning next year or not. From what I have heard it sounds like everyone will be back for the 2010 edition but I need to hear for sure. This would be a first for the league. If that is truly the case the division alignment for next year would be:

Division 1
Alliance Fire Company
Black Sox
Mad Bombers
West Catty Fire Co

Division 2
JT Electric
Easton Lawn Care
Leather Corner Post PA Eye Care

Division 3
Cross Keys
Joey Bs
Hitmen
Park Manor

And finally, I would like to thank everyone who went out of their way and arranged for my gift which was given to me on Tuesday night. It was completely unnecessary, but also greatly appreciated. I do hope you all realized that whenever I dropped comments like You guys dont pay me enough or I definitely want a raise that I was just kidding. Thank you, all. But now how am I supposed to be mean and nasty and miserable to you guys after that???

With the exception of that one incident at the tourney this year, overall the league ran smoothly and with hardly any problems this year. Once again it came down to the final night to determine who was qualifying and the seeding for the postseason. That in itself should show you what an even league this is and proves the old on any given night saying.

Let me know if you plan on coming back have a great winter, and see you all on the Saturday after the Superbowl (Cleveland Browns 23, Detroit Lions 13).

Teams designated to ump please send me the name and number of your ump so I can contact them in the event of rain.

Okay, gang lets talk about umping for the playoffs:

1 When you are scheduled to supply an ump it is your responsibility to ensure that someone from your team is there to ump for the series, and not just one night.
2 Please designate someone who has an understanding of the rules and general knowledge of the game. Do not hire your neighborhood newspaper boy to do this on your behalf.
3 Please designate someone with vocal chords who can be heard by both teams on any given play.
4 If you are umping, do not tell any of the participants who you are rooting for. You are there as a nonbiased ump and should not be rooting for anyone.
5 If you are umping, please remember that it is a thankless job, and these are the playoffs. Any close play is likely to be argued about, no matter which way you call it. Its part of the game. Please refrain from telling anyone who argues with you about your call to go f/k themselves. 6 If you are umping, and did not see the play because of a player blocking your view you do have the right to ask for help from your other umpire. Do not sheepishly make a call that sounds like you are not sure of yourself. Do not write to Dear Abby for advice. Contrary to what she writes she really does not care. Consult the other ump.
7 Home plate umps have foul ball calls. You should only call it if it is foul. Fair balls you should say nothing. My advice to outfielders is if you hear nothing chances are it is a fair ball. Fetch, boy

And now to the participants

1 If you disagree with a call only the coach / captain should be arguing with the ump. I understand that it is the heat of the moment, and you will argue for a few seconds but after that walk away and let your coach / captain argue on your behalf. Coaches and Captains keep your dogs on a short leash
2 Coaches and Captains if you disagree with a call, and I am there do not look to me to intervene or overrule the call. I will back the umpires 100%. The only way I will intervene is if it is a blatant misinterpretation of the rules.
Good luck to the Final Four

Umps for the 2nd round will be supplied by JT Electric, Leather Corner Post and one each from the first round losers.

Well, Gang

It has now been brought to my attention that should Hitmen sweep Black Sox we would have a 3 way tie with identical 17-11 records. Tie breakers are:

Hitmen would be 2-0 vs. Black Sox giving Hitmen the tiebreaker.

Hitmen and West Catty split. Moving to Runs Scored West Catty has 220 and Hitmen have 210.

Sooooooo.

Should Hitmen sweep the Black Sox JT and LCP are eliminated. Should Hitmen sweep and score at least 10 Hitmen get #4, Black Sox get # 5, and West Catty gets # 6.

Can someone shoot me, please???

Doc

As of August 11th
News, Notes, & Other Bullshit:

Up to the minute playoff picture

Alliance Fire Co. (21-5, Total Runs 256, Run Differential - +129) Division 1 winner. AFC will be either the number 1, number 2, or the number 3 seed. If they sweep tomorrow they get the #1. If they split tomorrow it will be a 3 way tie with identical 22-6 records. And here is where it gets hairy. AFC swept the Mad Bombers. PA Eye Care swept AFC. Mad Bombers Split with PA Eye Care. Since all three are from different divisions, divisional records are not used. In the event of this three way lunacy, we would move on to Total Runs. Currently Mad Bombers lead with 310, followed by PA Eye Care with 263, and AFC 256. To recap should AFC sweep they are #1, Mad Bombers are # 2, PA Eye Care are #3. Should AFC split Mad Bombers are # 1, with # 2 and # 3 to be decided depending on the number of runs AFC scores. AFC is currently down by 7 to PA Eye Care Got it? Good!!!

The #4 and #5 seeds will be going to Black Sox and West Catty Fire Co. respectively and they will play each other in the first round. Should the Black Sox lose two tomorrow they would both have identical 17 11 records but Black Sox own that tiebreaker by virtue of their 3-1 head to head record. Black Sox have choice of home or away the first game, switch the second, and choice if a game 3 is necessary. West Catty will bring the bases and set up the field the first night Black Sox will do the same if we go to Tuesday. Field and umps to be determined

# 6 is still up in the air. If Hitmen at least split they get the #6 seed. LCP solidified their cause by sweeping Park Manor and scoring 27 runs in the process. They need a Black Sox sweep and for Hitmen to score less than 24 runs and JT to lose at least one. JT Electric needs to sweep AFC, hope for a Black Sox sweep, and score at least 27 runs

I want a raise next year I definitely want a f/n raise next year

Bill Gates-ingly,

Doc

Greetings, all -

As you know, the number 6 seed is being fought over by JT Electric, LCP, and Hitmen. After further review here are the scenarios

Hitmen (15-11, Total Runs 210, Run Differential - +36) control their own destiny. They have a double header make up with Black Sox on Wednesday. If Hitmen win at least one of the two they have the last seed by virtue of at least a 16-12 record. In the event that they lose both, and JT wins both on Wednesday, and LCP wins both tonight we will have a 3 way tie with identical 15-13 records. All three teams split with each other during the regular season. Since all three are coming out of different divisions, the next tiebreaker of divisional records does not get used. So we then move on to total runs. Currently Hitmen have 210, JT has 208, and LCP has 207. (Pretty close, wouldnt you say? Whoever came up with this schedule is a f/n genius)

JT Electric (13-13, Total Runs 208, Run Differential - +26) have the toughest road. They need to sweep Alliance Fire Company (who are still playing for the #1 seed) on Wednesday, and hope for a Black Sox sweep over Hitmen. This would lead to the tiebreaker of total runs in which case they are currently down by 2. If they lose one game against AFC theyre out

LCP (13-13, Total Runs 207, Run Differential - +27) still have a good shot. They need to win 2 tonight against Park Manor and (nothing personal, Scotty) run up the score as much as they can they are currently down 3 from Hitmen, and 1 from JT. They also need a Black Sox sweep of Hitmen on Wednesday night to force the tiebreakers. If they should lose even one tonight theyre out as well.

On another note umps for the first round playoffs will be supplied by Cross Keys, Easton Lawn Care, Park Manor, and Joey Bs. I will let you know when and where

Good luck to all.

Pythagoras ingly,

Doc

Greetings

I have now computed all the runs scored and run differentials in case it comes down to that to break a tie and the spread sheet is attached. There are still make up games for this week.

Things that I am certain of Mad Bombers are guaranteed a #1 or # 2 seed and the bye that goes with it. The other top seed and bye will go to either Alliance or PA Eye Care. If Alliance wins at least 3 out of their remaining 4 # 1 goes to them, Mad Bombers #2. If Alliance dumps at least 2, the #2 seed and bye goes to PA Eye Care, Mad Bombers get # 1.

JT, LCP, and Hitmen are still battling it out for the final seedIt does appear as though the Hitmen are in the best position. If they split with Black Sox theyre in. Even if they lose 2 against Black Sox they will have a 15-13 record. Should LCP win their two against Park Manor it will come down to runs scored and differential. LCP is currently down by 3 in total runs and 9 in differential. So LCP has to not only win but run up the score. And then theres JT who have two with the Alliance. They need to win two, hope for a collapse by Hitmen and LCP and you know what? The possibilities are f/n endless and Im going crazy speculating, so f*ck it.

I will keep you all updated as the week goes on

Doc

WEEK 14
News, Notes, & Other Bullshit:

I am currently working on another email specific to the playoffs with scenarios, tiebreakers, etc., and hope to send that out by tomorrow. After this week JT, LCP, and Hitmen remain alive for the last playoff berth

Doc

Okay

Division Winners Alliance, Mad Bombers, and PA Eye Care are in (seeding still up in the air)

Wild Cards Black Sox, and West Catty

One Wild Card berth left being fought over by JT, LCP and Hitmen. (Note all three are in different divisions). There are too many scenarios / variables / if this team wins and that team loses / on an odd numbered day, in an even numbered month / during a full moon / when the moon is in the seventh house / and Jupiter aligns with Mars that I am not even going to attempt to calculate at this point. Suffice it to say:

JT is 13 13 with a double header vs. Alliance next Wednesday

LCP is 12 12 with a double header tonight vs. Easton Lawn Care, and a double header next Monday vs. Park Manor

Hitmen are 15 10 with one game tonight vs. PA Eye Care, and a double header next week vs. Black Sox.

My advice to these three teams is to win out and hope for the best. Seeding and the byes have yet to be determined

WEEK 13
News, Notes, & Other Bullshit:

A quick look at the playoff picture: Division 1 can still be won by anyone; however the Alliance controls their own destiny. Black Sox and West Catty have both qualified for the playoffs. JT is still mathematically alive. Mad Bombers have clinched Division 2 but are still playing for a bye. LCP is still alive and Easton Lawn Care and Cross Keys are both eliminated. Division 3 has been won by PA Eye Care, but Hitmen are still alive. Park Manor and Joey Bs have been eliminated. Bottom line there is one playoff berth left and 3 teams are fighting for it JT, LCP, and Hitmen

On another note thanks to last night we only have two more rain dates left. Should it rain Monday were screwed

Doc

Division 3 Winners

PA EYE CARE

WEEK 12
News, Notes, & Other Bullshit:

A quick look at the playoff picture: Division 1 can still be won by anyone; however the Alliance controls their own destiny. A resurgent West Catty squad has suddenly come to life and the way it looks now well have 3 teams from this division in the post season. Dont count out the defending champs JT, either. Mad Bombers have clinched Division 2 but are still playing for a bye. LCP and Easton Lawn Care are both still mathematically alive but even one more loss could doom either of them. Division 3 is a battle between PA Eye Care and Hitmen. They play each other Monday 3 games counting the suspended game. Should PA Eye Care win 2 of the 3 games they get the division, with Hitmen still alive for a wild card. Got it? Good.

Doc

Division 2 Winners

MAD BOMBERS

WEEK 11
News, Notes, & Other Bullshit:

Well, gang we are now entering crunch time in the league. We have completed interleague play and for the final 3 weeks everyone goes back to their own division and plays head to head. This could make or break a lot of you. Only 3 teams have been eliminated from the playoffs Cross Keys, Park Manor, and Joey Bs. Also we have a lot of continuations to be finished.

Please keep in mind that when you are finishing a suspended game that game is to be played before your regularly scheduled double header.

Doc

News, Notes & Other Bull****:

WEEK 10
It is tournament weekend. Regarding this weeks vote I asked for 11 teams to vote (Alliance couldnt since they were involved) which means I needed a majority of 6 either way. One team did not bother to vote, so the tally came in at 8-2 to allow Steve Price an exemption and play for the Alliance Fire Company. It also looks like we have a 60% chance of rain on Saturday. I will call if necessary but if you do not receive a call from me SHOW UP AT YOUR DESIGNATED TIME!!!

Good luck to all,
Doc

SPECIAL PARKS SCHEDULING SYSTEM NOTICE:

June 18, 2009

To All Athletic Field Users:

All fields are closed today due to the weather.

I would like to bring to your attention a recurring problem this year due in part to high rain fall and poor user judgment in assessing field conditions. As you are aware, it is expected that all users of athletic fields leave the facilities in the same condition they were presented to them for use. Failure to use best judgment in assessing poor playing conditions due to adverse weather often results in damage and abnormal wear to the fields.

Recently, excessive damage has been caused from individuals pushing water and infield mix into turf areas. This creates a pothole effect by making more of a depression and holding even more water the next time it rains. Standing water on the infields is a very good indicator that conditions may be too wet to play.

County staff puts forth much effort and takes great pride in maintaining the fields. We appreciate you using your best judgment when making decisions about playing conditions. Special care should be taken in assessing conditions when you see standing water on infields. At no time should water and infield mix be pushed into the turf area. Please remember that the fields require a number of hours to dry out after a heavy rain.

Sincerely,
Robert Stiffler, Director Lehigh County Parks and Recreation

News, Notes & Other Bull****:

WEEK 7
Well, gang as per the norm the rain is killing us again this year. We managed to get one scheduled double header in this week, and one continued game. We have just hit the half way point and all we have left is 7 rain dates. Keep in mind should those get used up I am looking at the possibility of getting S3 and S4 one Saturday for all day and conceivably playing a bunch of the make ups then.

On another note I will be ordering the trophies very shortly. Total of 8. We get 1st, 2nd, and 3rd for the tourney, each division winner, and 1st and 2nd for the playoffs.

Doc

News, Notes & Other Bull****:

WEEK 6
Gentlemen I recd votes from 9 out of the 10 teams I asked and in response to last weeks no show debacle it was unanimous 9-0 that the game be rescheduled. PA Eye Care has now been asked to supply me with a contact and email from someone else on the team to ensure that this does not happen again.

News, Notes & Other Bull****:

WEEK 5
Sorry nothing to say this week. Everyone behaved. Oh, wait. Cross Keys gets their first win of the year, while Mad Bombers drop their first two of the year.
This means everyone has at least one win while PA Eye Care remains the last of the undefeateds

News, Notes & Other Bull****:

WEEK 4
Hi gang. Once again I would like to apologize for how late these standings are going out. This was due to a death in the family and I would like to thank all of you that sent me a note of condolence in the recent passing of my father-in-law. Now, all I gotta do is find a way to kill off my brother-in-law I had planned on doing them (meaning the standings, not the brother-in-law) Friday but then my wife took the family camping all weekend leaving me with the house to myself. My house is typically full of kids every weekend. Instead of doing the standings I was totally enjoying having said house to myself. I spent the weekend running around naked, jumping on the bed, peeing in the shower, drinking milk straight from the carton, leaving the toilet seat up and all sorts of fun things like that which I never get to do anymore. But alas and alak all good things must come to an end. They are due home any minute so Im getting this done...

A few items of note with about of the season gone No one seems to be running away with Division 1 and that is still anybodys division. How about those 8-0 Mad Bombers? Theyre running away with Division 2, while Cross Keys is still looking for their first win. And the 6-0 PA Eye Care squad is ruling the roost in Division 3, with the Hitmen close behind. Park Manor finally got their first win of the season and has gotten of the schneid, leaving the aforementioned Cross Keys as the only team without a W(kind of like the White House these days)

We do have two very interesting makeups scheduled for this week both from Division 1. Tuesday the Black Sox are playing West Catty, and on Wednesday the Alliance Fire Company is playing JT Electric.

And finally our illustrious IT officer Jo Wexler wanted to make everyone aware that we may be losing our website shortly. She tells me that when she logs in to update the site - she gets the following message:
After careful consideration, Yahoo! has decided to close GeoCities later this year.
You can continue enjoying your GeoCities service until then we just wanted you to let you know about the closure as soon as possible. We'll share more details this summer.

Jo is hoping to get through this season before we encounter any problems. If anyone out there knows of any sites where we can operate and maintain a free website please let me know

Bachelor-ishly,

Doc

News, Notes & Other Bull****:

WEEK 2 & 3
Rehash, and repeat, and reschedule By now most of you are aware that County continues to bone us. You should have received the emails showing the entire permit fiasco. I am currently working with Robin Stemetzki of county to work everything out and she is doing her best to help us out. I do my best to contact all teams involved when makeups and games need to be rescheduled but I ask that your monitor these standing sheets as to the latest changes

Buddy Maxwell continues to bone me. Cmon Buddy. Every night each team is responsible to bring one ball for the game that they are playing as a home team.

Stiles is starting to bone us. I was there the first week and spoke with the Nazi who is in charge of the Stiles playground association. At that time he seemed rather cordial to me I gave him my contact info in case he needed it, a copy of the schedule, and a copy of the permit. At that time he assured me that they werent too concerned about beer as long as everyone cleaned up afterwards. Fast forward to this past Monday. I recd a call from Jason of Joey Bs who told me the guy was a real ass. Demanded to see their permits and pretty much screamed that there is absolutely no alcohol allowed. Based on this information I am telling all of you be very careful if you are taking beer when you play there. I would advise keeping it in the parking area. Also, be sure and have a copy of your permit with you whenever you play there. Please do not give Adolph a hard time if he ever asks for your permit. We do need this field at least for this year.

And finally my good friend Carl Benner tried to bone me. By now I am sure you have all seen the email regarding the bat being used by Alliance Fire Company. Said bat is a DeMarini but it is stamped ASA. I was there for a while on Monday night, looked at the bat myself, and by our league rules it is a legal bat. But I can also attest to the fact that Frenchy was taking a beating on the mound. A few comments if I may If someone actually feels that the bat has been tampered with I will confiscate it and cut it open on one condition. And that would be should nothing be found said person will buck up to replace the bat so please be sure of something before you start spouting off. And to quote Paul Ketner whose Black Sox played the Alliance in week 1 The first game was won by Alliance 3-0, and the second game was won by the Black Sox 7-3. Although most of the Alliance team was using that bat that night they only managed 6 runs in two games and the balls werent really flying anywhere. I ask once again that before you start making accusations please be sure of what you are going to say

Man, Im getting boned more this week than Courtney Love on dollar night

Skeleton-ishly,

Doc

News, Notes & Other Bull****:

WEEK 1
Greetings, and welcome to another season of the fun and frivolity that is the LVUSPL. First of all, let us review all of the recent name changes so everyone knows who is who. Hitmen were formerly Holiday Sounds. Easton Lawn Care is a new team a breakaway from Joey Bs. Cross Keys is a new team that played in the league a couple of years ago under the guise of D & B and Chicos Bail Bonds. PA Eye Care is formerly Adams Salads. Alliance Fire Co. is the former Laurel Hotel. Black Sox were formerly S & B last year, Clim-A-Temp the year before, and Leather Corner Post is the former Willow Street Pub. And, yes you need to know this for the test

As you are all aware I am now dealing with three govt. entities this year. Along with County, in procuring Stiles I must now deal with Whitehall Township and the Stiles Playground Association. Anyone who was there Monday, did see a gentlemen by the name of Mike Bankos from the Stiles Playground Association, keeping a watchful eye on things. He did tell me that although the permit does say no alcohol they tend to look the other way providing all messes are cleaned up, and the language and noise is kept to a minimum. In other words dont be an a$$hole!!!

In talking with Jo Wexler the website is just about fully updated and by the time you get this Im sure she will have the update for this year completed. Once again the URL is :
http://www.geocities.com/lvunlimitedslopitch/index.html

Okay lets review some of the rules that have already come into question. Dammit!!! Its only week 1!!!

Miken Bats: Any type of Miken bat has been ruled illegal. Any team caught using a Miken bat will forfeit that game. All bats must be stamped ASA certified or Official Softball.

Rain / Inclement Weather: If a game should be interrupted by inclement weather or darkness, it shall be considered a complete game if five full innings have been played. Once an inning has been started, it must be completed. Any play halted prior to the completion of 5 innings will be rescheduled and resumed at the point of play.

The overthrow rule: This is actually not written in our league rules but covered under ASA. When any throw from any fielder goes out of play any runner gets the base he was going to plus one from the point of release. There is no two from the outfield, one from the infield

Good luck to everybody
