When wetland deterioration was first noticed by farmers and aerial sprayers, not much was known about causes or remedies.  Since then, much has been accomplished by various federal, state, and university organizations to minimize or reverse this loss.

New wetlands are being created to replace those dying, but this system works best when large amounts of freshwater can be brought into the new land.  One of the techniques that seems most promising is the diversion of water from the Mississippi and Atchafalaya Rivers.

the next year's growth.

Some of the methods employed to
combat wetland loss are minimal human interference and various techniques
designed to keep Louisiana's
wetlands healthy-- such as controlled
burning of wetlands (shown above).
There has also been a push
toward mitigation banking as a deterrent to wetland loss.  Mitigation banking involves purchases of eligible land to be
converted into new wetland
by land developers.  In all cases,
destruction of wetland for
development is to be avoided, but
when this is not an option, developers may purchase land to convert to wetland.

When creating new wetland, dredged
material will be transported through
pipes to the new land site.
