Carl & Nia
Johnson, Germany, spent Christmas in Holland, where
Nia is from. Must be great
traveling around Europe, though there WAS that awful
stormy weather. Nias birthday was in Dec. & she
sent me the neatest thank you card for the card I sent! I
love getting "foreign language" cards. When I
was in Amsterdam to me the language was unfathomable in
speech - now I see its the same in print. ahaha.
Appreciated their kind words about "the
book!"...Dunka! Betty Rands, an Iowa City
98 cohort was down with the flu for some time over
the holidays. What a bad time! (Like anytime is good to
be sick?) She even called & left a message on my
recorder as she was too sick to type. My fall into the
trash can prompted her memory of the day, when she was
learning to ride a bike; she fell into the back of a
sanitary truck that was filled with slimy goop shoveled
out of the street gutters after a storm. She wasnt
hurt, but was covered with smelly debris & was happy
no one passed her on her way home! GREAT story!
Nephew Mike Marro & fam., Germany, cut down
their own Christmas tree this year & decorated it
with real candles. They graciously thanked me for the
Green Bay Packers loungeware I sent, even though
theyre Vikings fans. ahahaa... Mike enjoyed my
book, said they learned more about the family (his) than
hed ever known! Some gal who works on his Army
Post, Edwina Bittoe wants to write a review for
the Post paper when she gets back from a leave in the
states. Meantime on 1/10 Mike flew off to Washington
State for a month-long assignment after which hell
be in Superior for a week! Yippee! I "finagled"
a meeting
for him with my old friend Marite Butners (former
banking cohort), who at the time was in Washington D.C.
unfortunately. After a few phone calls back & forth I
am hopeful that they still can touch base & Mike will
get to see Marites Bainbridge Island home!

Jaye Bartha, Colorado,
kept me posted on her holiday visit out East to NYC
& New Jersey, emailing me along the way. She saw the
tree in Rockefeller Center & strolled through
Times Sq. at dusk. Also attended a performance of the
Marriage Of Figaro, at the Met. Said, "My nose
bleed wasnt so bad after all, in the cheap
seats." aaha - She and I have organized the
"Clan of the Strong Broads" to remind ourselves
to keep a stiff upper lip when things start to drag.
Since her return she is deep into her writing, again.
Jaye & I met in Iowa City last summer...a great gal
& lotsa fun! Helen Huebsch, Iowa City 98
friend, keeps in touch on the computer AND with her great
"Good News" newsletter, which I really love.
She keeps me posted on her "Alpha Writers"
group, who meet weekly. Their book, "The Best
of...." is paid for & - with about $1200. in the
bank for a
scholarship. All the money is being donated for that
cause. They have sold 500 copies. Darn good! Helens
daughter Diane, is a contestant in the Pillsbury Bakeoff,
one of 100 contestants in the nation. Is being flown to
San Fran. on 2/26 for the big bakeoff.
Helen was pretty bogged down over the holidays, what
with her huge family/friends. Yesterday she wrote about a
neighbor friend, who Helen is ministering to - such a
GOOD heart, has our Helen! Shirley Wick Anderson, high-school
cohort in TX and I have been going back & forth over
the name of a little coffee shop near our old Central
High. I finally got to the library and settled the
matter. It was called CORKYS AND HARRYS &
much to my surprise, was only in business from 1948
through 1950, but that would have been right for us.
Im pretty sure we just called it
"Corkys, tho. Shirley thought it was called "The Milk
House." Could be that it came later, as we were in
H.S. until 1953 & the other one was gone then. I rem.
going into Corkys, though.
