Analysis of Saul Bass Works (.css) (.html)
"My initial thoughts about what a title can do was to set mood and the prime underlying core of the film's story, to express the story in some metaphorical way. I saw the title as a way of conditioning the audience, so that when the film actually began, viewers would already have an emotional resonance with it." |

1. Focal Point: The iconographic image of the suited detective identifies him as the central charachter. The woman's image acts a secondary focal point. She is the negative image of the man. These two forms together reinforce the 'seeing double' feeling in the viewer -- a visual queue to the vertigo theme.
2. Rhythm: The spiral is the main source of energy in the composition, the parallel lines radiating from the central cred core from the vortex of the image.
3. Color: The unifying background color of red instantaneously communicates danger, passion, blood and intensity. |
