VISUAL ARTS

Art I                                     
1/2 credit
Prerequisite: None
Grades 9-12
Art I is a semester class that provides students with a background and vocabulary of the elements and principles of design.  Throughout the course students will build upon and utilize their knowledge and skills to solve visual art problems.  Students will learn techniques and media including drawing, painting, ceramics and sculpture. This course will provide students with a survey of art skills and ideas, as well as a strong foundation to prepare for further art classes.

Art II                                  
1/2 credit
Prerequisite: Art I and teacher approval
Grades 10-12
Art II is a semester class that will challenge students with more advanced projects in art and design.  Students will be involved in learning new techniques through various exercises and demonstrations, and then apply their knowledge of fundamentals, elements and principles into constructive new projects.  Students will integrate various media which will aid in solving problems of visual organization.

Art III              
1/2 credit
Prerequisite: Art II  and teacher recommendation
Grades 11-12
Art III is a semester course that will challenge students to increase their skills and knowledge of the fundamentals of art and design.  A strong focus will be placed on the application of previous knowledge to complex visual art problems with a concentration in three-dimensional works and the development of long-term multifaceted ideas.  Students will continue to use various media in a more advanced level.  Students will focus on the effective communication of ideas and will be encouraged to develop personal meaning and imagery in their work.

Pre-Advanced Placement Studio Art
1/2 credit
Prerequisites: Art I, Art II and teacher recommendation.  Additional art courses are recommended.
Grade 12
This course will be offered in the fall semester for seniors who would like to complete the College Board portfolio.  Students must have a thorough understanding of the elements and principles of design as well as knowledge and skills in various media and be self-motivated to enter this class.  The focus for this class will be advancing technical proficiency and students will be encouraged to think critically and solve complex visual problems in a unique and individualized way.  Students will complete the breadth portion of the AP Portfolio.  Extensive work outside of class is required.

Advanced Placement Studio Art         
1/2 credit
Prerequisite: 87 or better in Pre-Advanced Placement Studio Art and teacher recommendation.
Grade 12
This course will be offered in the spring semester for students who would like to complete the College Board portfolio.  Students will work on the concentration component of the portfolio and will develop one theme in their work throughout the entire semester.  Students must be self-motivated to enter this class and must be able to solve complex visual problems.  Extensive work outside of class is required.

Ceramics and Cultural Crafts

Prerequisite: None
Grades 9-12
This course will explore a variety of hand building clay techniques including slab creation and construction, sculptural pieces dealing with traditional and abstract components, reliefs, tiles, glazing techniques and functional pottery.  Students will also be introduced to an assortment of challenging and diversified craft projects which will allow for cultural exploration, creative expression, and technical diligence.

Advanced Ceramics

Prerequisite: Ceramics and Cultural Crafts
Grades 10-12
This course will foster basic concepts and skills that were learned and acquired from Ceramics and Cultural Crafts.  Students will create pieces utilizing their knowledge of elements and principles of design along with discovering new techniques, capabilities, and functional usage in past, present and future societies.  Various glazing and finishing techniques will be developed as well.

Drawing                                 
1/2 credit
Prerequisite: Art I
Grades 10-12
Drawing is a semester class that will introduce students to the media and techniques of this process as a complete artistic form.  Students will begin with the basics of drawing including contour, form, value, perspective, gesture and markmaking and then develop their ideas into more complex visual solutions.  Various media will be introduced and explored for their unique characteristics and qualities including pencil, charcoals, pastels, colored pencils, conte crayon, pen and ink and wash.  Focus will be placed on process and the manipulation of materials to solve visual problems.

Painting

Prerequisite: Art I
Grades 10-12
Painting is a semester class in which students will learn about the many unique properties and techniques of the painting medium and explore them through watercolor, tempera, gouache, acrylic and oil paints.  Students will apply their knowledge of elements and principles of design to their work and emphasis will be placed on color and color theory.  Students will work from observation, abstractly, and expressively to create their paintings and will look to historical and modern masters for inspiration in technique and style as well as learn about the evolution of painting and its various purposes.

Printmaking        
1/2 credit
Prerequisite: Art I
Grades 10-12
Printmaking is a semester class in which students will explore the many techniques of the printmaking process by creating prints by hand and through the use of the printing press.  Students will create prints through various techniques including linoleum and woodblock printing, collagraph, monotype, etching and screen printing.  The unique qualities of each process will be emphasized to make multiples of an image.  Students will be encouraged to experiment with the various materials to create unique visual images.

Intro to Computer Illustration and Graphic Design        
1/2 credit
Prerequisite: Art I
Grades 10-12
Utilizing industry standard computer graphics illustration software, students will learn the basic tools associated with the program and then further explore and apply these skills to specific illustration projects which will vary in range.  Knowledge of the fundamentals of design from Art I will be applied and developed to create visually interesting and well communicative compositions.  Previous computer skills are not required.
