| PERFORMING ARTS Instrumental Music (Concert and Pep Band) 1 credit Prerequisite: Completion of Middle School program or by audition Grades 9-12 The emphasis of this large ensemble is on the fundamentals of music performance on any instrument. Throughout the year, music from a variety of genres will be rehearsed to study musical concepts such as intonation, balance, blend, phrase, rhythm, articulation, dynamics, etc. The ensemble performs at several concerts as well as at other school and community events. Students are required to attend all of the above and to participate in all Marching Band performances. Individual practice is required. Vocal Music (Chorus) 1 credit Prerequisite: None Grades 9-12 This course is designed to cover the fundamentals of vocal performance through the study of solfege, sight singing, rhythm, intonation, diction and other musical elements, as we explore music of a variety of styles. This chorus performs several concerts and community events throughout the year, which all students are required to attend. Music Theory I 1/2 credit Prerequisite: None Grades 9-12 This course will introduce students to the study of the fundamentals of music theory. Understanding the concepts of note and rhythm reading, major scales, chords, and basic ear training will enable the students to compose simple melodies, duets and trios. Music Theory II 1/2 credit Prerequisite: Music Theory I Grades 10-12 This course will introduce students to more advanced concepts of music theory, such as analysis, minor scales, ear training, composition and conducting. It is designed for any students interested in furthering their musical knowledge or pursuing music in college. Students will be expected to submit a portfolio of all completed work at the end of the semester. Stagecraft 1/2 credit Prerequisite: None Grades 9-12 This course will introduce students to a variety of topics related to theater, such as history, styles and structures of drama, specific terminology used in the theater, techniques of pantomime, improvisation, and public speaking. Students will be expected to perform several techniques of acting individually and with other students during many class sessions as well as submit a portfolio of their work at the end of the semester for assessment. Basic Piano Class 1/2 credit Prerequisite: Permission of instructor Grades 9-12 Have you always wanted to learn to play the piano? This course is for you! Throughout the semester, we will learn the basics of note and rhythm reading and piano techniques that will provide you with the foundation of piano performance. Music Appreciation 1/2 credit Prerequisite: None Grades 9-12 If you are interested in broadening your musical background, this is the course for you. We will explore the elements of music, such as meter, rhythm, and dynamics. We will also research the development of the instruments of the orchestra, learn about music from around the world, composers from a variety of genres and their works, and finally figure out how to read music. You will have a chance to try out several instruments, build your own, write your own music, and demonstrate your knowledge of other musical concepts through hands-on learning. |
