Chapter 6- Damn it…

Excuse me…who are
you?

Hideki allowed Aoshi to lead
her out into the middle of her cousin's garden and seat her on large,
flat-topped rock before settling down beside her in his graceful, soundless
manner.
Aoshi watched the woman beside
him with more interest than he usually gave to his investigation assignments.
Her lucid skin and smooth cyan colored hair glistened in the moonlight with an
almost ethereal glow, causing the bright blush on her cheeks to be more
prominent than it should have been. He had to admit that the overall effect was
quite…appealing.
"She is very attractive,"
he mused, "no one would guess that she was Japanese though, her features
are somewhat exotic."
Hideki stole occasional glances
at Aoshi out of the corners of her eyes, "Well this is…a surprise."
she thought nervously. Never in her wildest dreams could she have pictured the
quiet man she'd met in the dojo the day before could be so…forward. It was
quite unnerving actually; she was the one who was supposed to be seducing him!
"Get a grip Hideki!"
she ordered herself mentally, "You're acting like a 15 year old rookie!
Now get in there and do what you do best!"
"Yatta!" Hideki
agreed with her pep talk self and turned back to face Aoshi head on.
Which was something of a
mistake, although the subject is open to interpretation.
As Hideki turned toward the okashira
she caught a look in his eyes that she had seen before. At first she hoped that
her imagination had made a grave error, but that theory was quickly abandoned
when Aoshi's hand gently but firmly took hold of her chin and his face drew
closer to her own.

CRRRAAAASSHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kaoru looked up in alarm just
in time to see a broad band of white lightning streak across the sky before
another deafening clap of thunder sounded all the way across Tokyo. After
Hideki had left with Aoshi, she'd decided to go ahead and have a drink with the
rest of the girls at least that way she would be too drunk to care. However, as
soon as she had raised the liquor to her lips, there was the sound of the sky
itself tearing in two and a brilliant white flash, as if the light of heaven
itself were shining through the tear.
The others were alarmed only
because it meant that if the rains came, the party with all its free food and
top class sake would have to come to a premature end. How unfair.
Kaoru, on the other hand saw
something else the celestial display and it alarmed her to almost as great as
an extent as Kenshin's sudden departure all those long years ago.
Kenshin who had recovered
somewhat from Aoshi's previous display, looked outside with an uneasiness that
he could not place outside of the disappointment the others must have felt.
"Eeto…I hope the rain holds up, that I do." he said softly.
Kaoru's expression darkened,
"There isn't going to be any rain…" she said quietly.
"Nani?" Kenshin
questioned innocently.
"Hm? Oh nothing Kenshin, I
just wondered if that thunder woke Yahiko up. I think I'll go check on him,
alright?" She said with a gentle
smile.
"Alright." Kenshin
agreed with a smile of his own.
Kaoru got up from her seat with
one graceful movement and padded her way back toward their sleeping quarters.
However, she passed right by Yahiko's room, which she came to first, and
instead slipped into hers and Kenshin's.
Looking around carefully, she
opened the chest where her most cherished belongings lay. Struggling past
lengths of expensive silk and treasured memories of her first family she came
to a small, neatly wrapped package at the very bottom. At the top there was a
wax seal with the image of an animal upon it. Closing her eyes and holding both
hands palms down over the object she moved her lips silently for a few moments.
Under her hands the seal glowed
briefly before separating into two and allowing the rest of the wrapping to
fall away. Opening her eyes Kaoru looked at what was revealed with trepidation
to say the least.
In the center of the wrappings
lay a small jade box with an image similar to that of the seal engraved on the
lid. Like someone in a dream, she reached out to touch the lid her fingers
stretching across the distance that seemed to last forever.
Unconsciously, a small, almost
unintelligible sentence formed on her tongue and fell from her lips like
desperate prayer.
"Kaa-san," she
whispered, "be with me."

Outside Hideki had practically
jumped away from Aoshi's oncoming embrace as if he were suddenly caught on
fire. To anyone else it would seem she was the one who was acting strangely,
but as the lightning flashed above them it illuminated more than his face.
"Oh Gods," Hideki
groaned, "not now!"
To Hideki's inner eye, the area
around Aoshi's body glowed with light. Not the warm yellows and oranges of a
normal human aura, but a cold, hard, white light like the lightning that
flashed in the sky overhead.
Aoshi's behavior, the sudden
celestial pyrotechnics, it all became clear to her in an instant. Taking a few
more steps backward she stopped and raised her hands to the heavens.
"O key which hides the
power of the wars, reveal thy true form before me! I, Hideki, command thee
under combat! Release!!!" she cried out at the top of her voice.
Her words were nearly drowned
out as the thunder clapped again and the lightning flashed even brighter than
before. Above her head the wind swirled into a cyclone whose heart exploded in
a flash of brilliant white. Hideki shielded her eyes for a moment and looked up
again to find the figure of a beautiful woman with a strange mark on her
forehead floating above her.
"Pay dirt." she
scowled.
