And it'll happen
once again
I'll turn to a
friend
Someone who
understands…
Blink182

The few seconds that it took
Kaoru to run into the garden where Hideki and Aoshi had gone seemed to last
forever. No matter how fast she moved her feet, it was as if she were pulling
against some unseen current that was determined to keep her away.
"Damned, frickin', stupid
kimono!" she swore as she skid around the corner of the house and ran down
the path towards her cousin and her friend.
*************************************************************
"Hidekiii!!!"
Hideki spun around just in time
to see Kaoru turn the corner and make a beeline straight for where she stood.
Planting both feet on the ground and crouching as low as she could, she skid to
a stop next to where Hideki stood and looked up.
"Is that what I think it
is?" she gasped.
Hideki nodded gravely,
"Sure explains a lot doesn't it?" she said softly.
Kaoru looked at her cousin's
profile then at the ground. "What, what do we do?" she asked quietly.
Hideki smiled enigmatically,
"Not 'we' Kaoru," she said reaching into her obi, "You."
Pulling out what looked like a small key, she pressed it into Kaoru's palm.
Kaoru stared at her hand in
disbelief. "I can't take this!" she cried.
"Hideki smiled again as a
short sword materialized before her. Grabbing the hilt with her left hand she
addressed Kaoru again.
"Now, why in the name of
our ancestor would I need two channels?" she asked coquettishly as she
pulled another item from her belt.
Throwing what looked like a
piece of parchment into the air, she held the sword horizontally in front of
her face. The parchment descended and stuck to the blade, sending bright sparks
flying that made Kaoru look away.
When the light had faded enough
for her to see again, she found a tall, hooded figure looming before her
cousin's figure.
"Shadow," Hideki
commanded, "Hide us from view!"
Obediently the figure rose high
above them and spread all around them until it formed to be a black dome around
them and the bright apparition above them. Then, the dome faded from view and
the two women along with it.
Hideki turned toward Kaoru and
threw another parchment at her. "Here," she said, "the damned
thing refused to work for me last time, I think that it's yours."
Kaoru blinked in shock as she
looked at the article in her hand. "I…I can't." she stammered.
"Sure you can, " she
said with an encouraging smile, "just the way oba-san taught us."
Kaoru froze for a moment under
Hideki's gaze and then looked down at the items in her hands. It didn't take
her long to reach a decision.
Flipping the parchment into the
air as Hideki had done she held the key in front of her like a bokken.
"Wind!" she commanded, transforming the key into a baton,
"Release at my command!" she touched the end of the wand to the card
as it descended causing a flash as bright as Hideki's. Another womanly figure
arose from the card and faced Kaoru as the shadow had faced Hideki. "Wind," Kaoru commanded pointing
to the figure above, "attack her, return her powers to me!"
The figure under Kaoru's
command rose into the air and spread itself around the figure which did not
seem to retaliate.
"Well that was easy."
Kaoru began to say.
"Think again!" Hideki
screamed knocking her cousin out of the way as Aoshi appeared out of nowhere
and lunged at her. Tumbling to a stop a few feet away she rose and brandished
her sword at their attacker. "Aoshi," she warned, "you may be as
cute as hell, but you lay a finger on Kaoru and I swear I'll open up a can of
whoopass on you."
The wind looked down at Kaoru
as if unsure of its actions.
Kaoru smiled, "Go ahead Windy!"
she cried, "Capture it!"
Above them the wind began to
spin in circles around it's opponent until there was nothing but a blurred
light above. There was a sound like a scream and the first figure fell to the
ground again as if exhausted.
Kaoru stood shakily and held
the wand over the creature, "Return to your power confined!" she
commanded.
The woman-creature and the wind
exploded in a flash of light and two cards floated down toward Kaoru who caught
them in her left hand before falling to her knees.
Yards away, Aoshi slumped
forward into Hideki's arms who managed to catch him and ease him to the ground
before running to her cousin's side.
Smiling widely, Hideki held
Kaoru in a crushing embrace, "You did it kiddo!" she cried happily.
"Kaoru managed a weak
smile, "Don't call me kid, you rookie."
Hideki's smile widened,
"Fair enough." She replied as she helped Kaoru to stand.
"Shadow return!" she
commanded calling her card back to her.
Kaoru looked down at where
Aoshi lay sprawled on the ground. "Oh no…Aoshi." she whispered.
Hideki smiled down at his
sleeping form ruefully, "Cute isn't he?" she drawled noticing some
drool on the side of his face.
"What do we…?"
"Don't worry I'll handle
it, " Hideki assured her "You just hurry back to your party.
Alright?"
Kaoru blinked.
"Now!" Hideki
commanded giving her a push.
"If you say so. "
Kaoru mumbled heading back to the house.
As Kaoru walked away Hideki
knelt and leaned toward Aoshi's face, "I should have known you were too
good for me anyway." she whispered sadly as she gave his forehead a gentle
kiss.

Kaoru paused as she heard
Hideki's voice, heightened to space cadet octaves ask if "poor-baby"
Aoshi was "awright".
"You must have pawtied
waaaay too hawd!" Hideki squealed.
"But I don't drink
alcohol." Aoshi replied.
"Hm, maybe somebody spiked
the tea?" she suggested.
"Wild party." Aoshi
said weakly.
Hideki gave a patented airhead
laugh, "You're funny! Need some help?"
"I'm fine thank you."
"Suit yourself!"
Kaoru smiled and slipped away
through the back door of the house.
