I discovered that there are many kinds of communication that should go on in any given classroom if things are to go as best as they possibly can. I discovered during my student teaching that parent involvement overall seems to become progressively less as the child progresses through school. In first grade, there were daily eMails and notes between the teacher and the parents while at the secondary level the first real communication the teachers had was at “Back to School Night” approximately a month into the school year.
I believe communication to be one of the key assets in any students’ success. At the elementary school level it is of greater importance since the student is brand new at accepting responsibility for their actions and their learning. Therefore they need all the support they can get. This – to me – explains why at the higher levels there wasn’t as much interaction between teachers and parents. At this point the students are – or should be – aware of this responsibility and should have assumed it already. Too often this isn’t the case, however, and this is where communication becomes a crucial asset. I intend to have the kind of atmosphere in my classroom, where it is possible to reach a student by one-on-one interaction. Where it is possible for the student to improve be it through some form of agreement with the teacher – or better yet, with his or herself – through tutoring with the teacher or by peers or the students’ own commitment. The students will be aware that I will be in communication with their parents about any number of things, from their grades to their behavior and I intend to establish a link as early in the school year as possible as not to miss any opportunities to help the student. Also, communication with counselors, the students’ other teachers and my own colleagues will feature in any single child’s instruction and assessment. Communication in the classroom isn’t just limited to people however, since staying a good teacher also means staying involved with the latest methods, strategies, studies and ideas in education as well as various developments in the language itself. Be it by phone, eMail, snail-mail or student-mail, communication will feature prominently in my classroom and will hopefully be a positive aspect for all involved. |
