The Guncannon was the second Mobile Suit created by the Earth Federation after hearing rumors of the advanced Mobile Suit technology the Principality of Zeon was designing. Created in UC 0077, it was part of "Operation V" and was the second in a group of three prototype Mobile Suits. The Guncannon was quite a bit more advanced than the RX-75-4 Guntank, sporting legs instead of treads and manipulators instead of Rocket Launchers. The Guncannon was designed with mid-range as well as close-range fire capabilities to attack Zeon Mobile Suits from a medium to short distance. As with the Guntank and RX-78-2 Gundam, the Guncannon used the Core Block system, which allowed the pilot a means of escape as well as defense should anything happen to the Guncannon. In UC 0079, the Guncannon was being tested in Side 7 where it was scheduled to be collected by the Federation vessel White Base. During the transfer, Side 7 was attacked by the Zeon and only one Guncannon prototype survived. This remaining prototype, along with the other surviving Guntank and Gundam prototypes, was salvaged by the White Base. The Guncannon was used in space and on Earth in all of White Base's major battles. When the White Base was sent to space, a second Guncannon (reconstructed from the remains of another prototype) was assigned to White Base. Both Guncannons fought in the final battle of the One Year War where both were destroyed.The Guncannon's dual fighting abilities (mid-range and close-range) proved to be very useful in the fight against the Zeon.
