UC 0075-0079

The Guntank was the first Mobile Suit created by the Earth Federation upon hearing rumors of the advanced Mobile Suit technology the Principality of Zeon was designing. Created in UC 0075, it was part of "Operation V" and was the first in a group of three prototype Mobile Suits. The Guntank was designed to be an anti-MS unit in case the rumors of Zeon's Mobile Suit development program were true. In comparison to the RX-77-2 Guncannon and the RX-78-2 Gundam, the Guntank's design was rather primitive and allowed it limited mobility during combat. The Guntank was designed with long-range fire capabilities to attack Zeon Mobile Suits from a distance. As with the Guncannon and Gundam, the Guntank used the Core Block system, which allowed the pilot a means of escape as well as defense should anything happen to the Guntank. In UC 0079, the Guntank was being tested in Side 7 where it was scheduled to be collected by the Federation vessel White Base. During the transfer, Side 7 was attacked by the Zeon and only one Guntank prototype survived. This remaining prototype, along with the other surviving Guncannon and Gundam prototypes, was salvaged by the White Base. The Guntank was used in space and on Earth in all of White Base's major battles as well as the final battle of the One Year War, where it was destroyed. Despite its akward design, the Guntank proved to be useful in the fight against the Zeon.
