Need Applied Case(s) for Intro to IS course
(Compiled by Andrea Carugati, IÉSEG School of Management, March 2005)
[Original Posting]
I usually give to my students in Introduction to IS (it is the first
undergrad course in IS for them) a simple case to solve. I want them to
have an idea of the difference between data and applications and to
understand TPS, MIS and DSS in practice. So, for example, in the past I
gave them to do an hotel reservation system in Excel. I gave them a
basic system to improve. They had to create a searchable DB of clients,
register bookings, deplete stock, create invoices (TPS), they had to
make overview graphs (MIS), and have the system suggest a discount rate
(DSS).
I have now to give the students a new case similar to the above so I
would like to ask whether you have anything similar (Excel is a good
base because they know how to use it) that you can share with me or can
point me in the right direction to find some.

I have written one case that might be helpful to you: Tissage et
Broderie. It is registered with Ivey Publishing, and you can view

This Excel case by Doug Dean and I may be of help to you.

A colleague of mine forwarded to me a note that you had written
(see below).
You asked about the availability of cases. Please allow me to
promote the casebooks that Ellen Monk and I have written for
Course Technology. The latest version is Problem Solving Cases
in Microsoft Access and Excel, 2nd edition. The book has cases
and tutorials. The cases might be the kind you are looking for.
We have written a 3rd edition, scheduled for next year.
Your Course Technology representative could get you a desk copy,
or you could do that on line (http://www.course.com/mis/).
