Summary of selection interview at Detroit on 31 Aug 1998We reached the consulate at 10:00 am and were asked to submit the documents we had been asked to get. We were called in at 11:35 am by visa officer (LADY X) and followed her to her office. She introduced herself and told us that if we did not understand anything we could interrupt her.
Q : Your degree is MCA. Can you tell me about it ?
Q : Tell me about your work.
Q : You look very different from your photograph.
A : For the last 6 months I have been on a diet & workout and I have lost 55 lbs.
- {Showed mole on right elbow which is mentioned as an identification mark on passport}
- {And removed spectacles since all my photographs are without them after this she was}
- {able to relate the photograph to me}
Q : Why did you decide on Canada?
Q : What about your income potential?
She then said that she was very impressed with my communication skills, language etc. She had assessed us at X out of 10 on the factor of personal suitability, and that we could come and pickup the landing papers at 02:00 pm.
We asked about our medical evaluation it was M3 for both of us. I have mild ulcerative colitis and my wife has a goiter and had a kidney stone removed before the medicals.
We made separate folders for documents based on type:
1) Identification - FBI report, Passports, Interview letter, birth and marriage cert.2) Education - All degree cert., grade sheets and syllabus with educational equivalence reports.
3) Finances - Bank statement, brokerage statement and recent pay stub.
4) References - Letters of references of current and past employers and clients arranged in inverse chronological order.
5) Job search - Correspondence regarding job search with Canadian companies.
All folders were labeled with list of contents.
Our impression is that the officer saw the organised arrangement of documents and was impressed with it. She said that our weight losses program was a sign of motivation and perseverance to succeed. The visa officer mentioned to us that they are on the watch for tutored candidates and looking at our organised folder etc. thought we were tutored to present documents etc. But my answers to questions about my work, studies and reasons for choosing Canada and the fact that we had considered other countries which were answered in great detail changed her impression about being tutored.
