H&C Cover Letter
A brief overview
of my cover letter format.

Dear Program Manager:

Paragraph 1
|
In this paragraph I introduced myself and
stated what I was doing (applying for Canadian
immigration) and that I wished to be considered
under H&C grounds due to my same-sex
partnership. I made reference to the government
telex regarding H&C same-sex immigration. I
mentioned my partner and length of time we were
together (approx. 7 years) and our desire to
remain together.

Paragraph 2
|
Next, I briefly summarized the course of our
relationship. I purposely kept this short. It
was my longest paragraph, but it was still just
about 12 lines. My reason for doing this was
because I wanted to provide something as concise
as possible. I didn't want my sole purpose for
writing lost amidst the sea of words in a tragic
love saga of two lovers. Sure, getting it all
out can be very therapeutic, but the Program
Manager is not a therapist. The Program Manager
handles immigration cases and is probably a very
busy person. I figured if I kept my letter as
short and to the point as possible, I'd be doing
the Program Manager a favor.

Paragraph 3
|
Here I talked about how much it would benefit
me and my partner if I were allowed to
immigrate. I wanted them to know that I would be
a productive member of Canadian society.

Paragraph 4
|
I mentioned what kinds of documents I was
including to support my H&C application.

Paragraph 5
|
Closure: BRIEFLY restated my reason for
writing and I thanked the Program Manager .

NOTE: I hope this
overview of my letter helps others. It is by no means
complete. I based it on a variety of standard letter
formats I reviewed. It is also addressed the the Program
Manager of the consulate that I applied to. If you're
applying to another consulate or embassy then the letter
should be address to that address rather than the one I
used. Do not use my letter as a template. I am sharing it
only to demonstrate ONE possibility. It may even be
detrimental to our cause if too many people submit very
similar support documents with their application. There
are other things that can be included in the cover letter
as well as additional advice, all of which are included
in the LEGIT booklet.
