Panzer Dragoon originaly started way back on the Sega Saturn. With the first game (Panzer Dragoon) the series quickly made a strong point and became a favorite among many gamers. It was a new type of a game falling in both a shooter and an action adventure genre. Soon after Panzer Dragoon Zwei came out. It followed in the same footsteps as the original. Again with the succes of it Team Andromeda who was behind this series all along decided to make another. This time however they decided to turn the series into and RPG. With no surprise Team Andromeda pulled it off again. However with the poor sales that Sega was experiencing and the few days remaining for their Saturn console Panzer Dragoon slowly started to fade out. Even with the great sales Panzer managed, Sega decided to stop and hope that better times will come in the future. Soon after things began to get worse as Sega showed no sign in continuing the series. As time went by Team Andromeda too felt the loss and eventualy fell apart. The hope for the continuation of the series was fading and fast. Time passed and the Dreamcast came about. That brought hopes back to many. It showed promise but before anything could be announced Sega decided to pull out of the hardware business. However to much surprise Sega quickly announced their plans for the future. One of the things outlined was their support for the next generation consoles with great games. It was then that they announced that they will try to resourect the series again. It was decided that the project will be taken up by Sega's own development team Smilebit. Titled Panzer Dragoon Orta, the game is still in development and is set for release on the Xbox sometime around January 2003. The game is set as a shooter, and it will share the same basic structure as the first two games in the Panzer Dragoon series. Players will be able to move in different positions to attack weak points on boss enemies and even morph the dragon to increase their offensive or defensive capabilities. It was also hinted that the game will follow the same system where you will have one path to follow and occasionaly have the ability to branch off to a different section. Orta basically takes place in the same world as the previous Panzer Dragoon game, which has been destroyed. The biological weapons that were created through genetic engineering coexisted with humankind, even though human beings were threatened by these creatures. But the empire that was supposed to be destroyed was revived, and they've dug out the weapons from the previous civilization, formed a military, and started conquering the world using drones. However, there's an abnormality with the source of energy used to create the biological weapons, and they decide to attack a city. During the attack, they are looking for the girls in the city, and that's when a dragon becomes involved--when it comes to save the city. That's how the game opens, but there will be more to the story as you go. For example, some of the mysteries from the previous three games will come up so there is lots to look forward to. Graphic wise the game is already looking stunning. Smilebit did hint that if the series does go well they will produce another game to add to the collection. They said they are not sure yet but it could be in a form of an RPG like Saga was. Definately something to look forward to. We will follow this so keep it here for all the latest. |
