Top 100 best games ever
according to me!
Presented here is the list of my
Top 100 games ever, across all formats owned or played by me throughout the
past 18 odd years.
This list comprises solely
of games that I have played! So if your
favourite game isn’t listed, don’t scream, “How can ‘Doggy planet from Outer
Space’ not be in the Top 100 games of all time!” It means one of two things.
1.
I simply missed it out by mistake (YOU try and look
through 20 years of video game titles!!).
In this case, please email me informing of the game and if it was simply
miss-forgotten, I’ll add it!
2.
I may have never played what you consider to be your
favourite game! Yep, although I’ve been
playing games for 20 years, I haven’t played them all!!!!
Now I’ve owned a whole bunch of
the video games machines out there (Apart from the obscure Japanese ones) so
this list can only include the formats that I’ve either owned or played with in
that time.
The formats I’ve owned or played
with are:
Binatone (couldn’t resist adding
this to the list, although it’s games are hardly gonna make it into the Top
100)
Atari 2600
ZX Spectrum +
C64/C128
Commodore Amiga
IBM PC compatible
NES
Sega Master System
SNES
Sega Megadrive (Genesis)
Sega GameGear
Gameboy
Gameboy Colour
Turbo Grafx 16
NEO GEO
Atari Lynx
Sony Playstation
N64
Sega Dreamcast
Gameboy Advance
PS2
XBOX
Nintendo GameCube
Some of these formats have been
played solely though emulator. Whilst
this may be a little unfair, I’ve tried to take that into consideration. (The main culprit here is the Neo Geo).
Ok, so what’s the criteria for a
game to be included in my Top 100 of all time?
1.
I’ve got to have remembered it! If I haven’t remembered it, then it’s not in my list. We’re talking 20 years and thousands of
games. I can hardly expect to be able
to remember all of them now can I?
Obviously this list isn’t off the top of my head, I’ve been sifting
through lists of games and picked out the most memorable. HOWEVER!!
This does mean that there may be some games that I haven’t
remembered. Email me if there are any
games on those formats that you think should be included. If I’ve played them and I agree, I’ll
happily add it to the list and bump a game out! If I haven’t played it, I may give it a shot on emu etc and may
still love it enough to add it.
2.
Sequels. On a
number of occasions you may find that one game out of a series is in the
list. If a series of games are very
similar, I need to make a decision on which one to list. Why?
Well, if I include all sequels, too many positions will be used up by
them. Imagine - every single Mario game will be listed. That’s about TEN games by themselves so this
would turn into the top 90 + Mario games.
Then add 3 or 4 Res Evil games, 3 or 4 Tomb raider’s, 4 or 5 Sonic’s
etc, etc. So by the time you finish,
you’ll only have about 60 positions left for original games. In the instance of sequels, I’ve taken
either the one that made the most impact on the games landscape or the one that
I enjoyed the most! Either way, I’ll
explain why I chose that one above all others!
3.
I’ve used a very basic and not very logical, ‘is this game
better than the last game’ system. For
instance, I’ve reached #46. I look at
#45 in the list and ask myself a simple question – ‘Does it deserve to be
before the game in position 45? Yes –
make it #45, no leave it at 46.
4.
The main criteria for a game being in the Top 100, is that
I believe it deserves to be. Whether
that’s because I played it years ago or played it yesterday and absolutely
loved it! Or because it was a landmark
title that helped push the gaming world on a bit. Usually, you’ll find that the second option goes hand in hand
with the first. I.e. For it to be a
landmark title, I probably loved it!
I think that’s pretty much it
for now. I may amend this page as well
as almost definitely amend the top 100 itself again and again.
In the meantime, enjoy, have a
good debate about the list, email me if you agree/disagree and add your
thoughts about certain position numbers in the Message Board (Coming Soon)!
Thanks & take care!
Luigi.
