 MY PARTNER
TOO QUICK TO JUDGE
SWIMMING THE HORSE
THE RIVER & I

 MY PARTNER

I stood outside tonight,
My bare feet on bare earth,
And I stood next to my true partner.
His black hooves an inch from my toes
But I wasn't nervous.

Buddha has been here
Almost as long as Kota has been,
And funnily enough, until recently
I never really wanted him, or
His gaited Appaloosa feet.

A few weeks ago, I found out
That my first horse, Sprocket
Had gone to his final resting
place, wherever it is, and for
The first time, I felt alone.

For almost a year and a half,
I've been trying to force
Kota, the Paint I always wanted,
Into the hole in my heart
Made when Sprocket was sold,

This same horse is the
Reason I tried to hate Buddha.
Kota's awful feet kept him
Field bound and away from me
For the greater part of a year of the year I've had these two.

So, I had to ride the App,
And for my stupid, selfish brat reasons,
I've acted like it was an inconvenience to me.
Every trail ride,
At least one person has commented on our connection.

And every time, I scoffed at
Them and their inability to see
The obvious. I wanted to scream,
"Do you really think that I would ride
This black beast if I had a choice?"

But I think, even then I
Knew that their words rang all too true.
The "black gaited beast" fills my
Sprocket shaped hole, and
Unlike Kota, he is my partner.
