Plant PropogationLeaf Cuttings:This can be fun as an activity for young kids. I can remember, Mom sticking leaves into little glasses of water, then lining them up on the window ledge in the kitchen. The funny thing is, I had forgotten all about it until an online conversation brought it back into my mind. But, while I can now remember that thin glass line on the sill, I cannot recall which plants she used, or anything else that she may have done to them. So, this email acquaintance plants a seed-of-thought in my brain which grows into an itch, and the next thing you know ... my wife's poor African Violet barely survives a brutal attack by a mysterious pair of scissors. Now, I'm not going to point fingers (especially at myself) but the culprit is reported to have taken each leaf with some stem and placed them into little glasses of water, which are now lined up on a kitchen windowsill. March 19: I have hired the team of Lucas and Adria (my brats) to keep tabs on the condition of the cuttings. They have been instructed to keep the water topped up, and to report any possible root activity. I'll keep you informed as this situation unfolds. April 19: Just thought I'd post an update for you. All of the leaf cuttings have survived this long and they are all well rooted. I am waiting for an opportunity to get some potting mix and will be getting the plants into dirt as soon as I can. Thanks for stopping by, Brett |
