Hosta
What I know:
� Perennial.
� Literally hundreds of varieties - in a multitude of shapes, sizes, textures, and colours.
� Grown primarily for it's foliage and shade tolerance.
� Does produce a flower on stalks that rise above the leaves.
� This is one of the workhorse plants - it will take a lot of abuse, variable light and soil conditions.
� Has a compact, clumping habit, but expands the clump quickly.
� Easily propogated by root division - clean the root mass and cut off each seperate plant with a knife to get the most out of it (or do like I do and drive a spade through the clump to make quarters which can be plant seperately).
The broad, dense leaves help to keep weeds from becoming established.
� In my opinon, this plant should be considered a staple in all gardens.
Hosta fortunei (Hosta 'Aureo-marginata')
{From plant tag} "Dark-green leaves with golden-yellow borders. Pale lavendar flowers in August. Use for borders, specimen, ground cover. How to grow: Hostas tolerate sun or shade , but most show the best leaf coloration in partial shade. Space 24inches apart. Grows to 18-27 inches."
