EASTERN FRONT TANK LEADER SCENARIOS
As noted elsewhere I bought Eastern Front Tankleader
back in 1989 . I thought the formation-card activation system was interesting
but could never get to grips with the rest of the mechanics. Nonetheless, the
game has some interesting scenarios and its scale makes it suitable for
conversion the to the Talonsoft Campaign system. The scenarios below are all
for use with Eastern Front II.

NOTES
|
|
Armoured Breakthrough USSR v Germany Complexity: 2 |
Best played against Soviet
AI. This is a desperate fight for the Germans. The bulk of their forces
consist of Panzerschrek equipped infantry so they very much have to rely on
ambushes from woods and towns to reduce the Soviet armour before it reaches
the exit objectives. |

|
Summer 1941 |
Armoured Breakthrough Germany v USSR Complexity: 2 |
Best played against Soviet
AI. Another tough one for the Germans as their tanks don't have much chance
of knocking out the Soviet KVs or T34s. They do have 75mm anti tank guns but
these aren't much use in an offensive role. |
|
Spring 1945 |
Meeting Engagement Germany v USSR Complexity: 3 |
This is a tank battle pure
and simple. The Soviets have the advantage of overwhelming numbers but the German
panzer formations are of elite quality which should help redress the balance
somewhat. |
|
Battle for the Berlin Seelow Highway Spring 1945 |
Meeting Engagement Germany v USSR Complexity: 3 |
Broadly similar to The
Elbe River Blues above. This time though the Soviets have IS-IIs which can
deal with most German tanks. The Germans have less armour than before so will
probably find things more difficult. |
|
Spring 1941 |
Pocket Breakout USSR v Germany Complexity: 3 |
Best played against Soviet
AI. It’s easy for the Soviets to win this scenario if they keep their forces
together and rely on their KV tanks to demolish the German armour. The time
frame is too early for T70s so I’d consider substituting T40s or T26s. |
|
Autumn 1941 |
Armoured Breakthrough
Germany v USSR Complexity: 3 |
The German mobile forces
should find it easy to outflank the Soviet infantry positions. However, the Soviets
receive KV tank reinforcements which are a much tougher proposition,
especially when they sit on the exit objectives. |
|
Spring 1941 |
Meeting Engagement Germany v USSR Complexity: 3 |
Not dissimilar to On the
Road to Moscow above, but with slightly different forces on both sides. The
German mortars seem to be of only marginal value given that the Soviet force
is mostly made up of tanks. |
|
Winter 1943 |
Meeting Engagement Germany v USSR Complexity: 3 |
This strikes me as a
pretty grim scenario: An armoured battle in a near featureless frozen
wilderness with hills providing the only cover. The Germans have the more
powerful force but will have to move fast to exit enough units off the map.
The other alternative is to stay and fight it out with the Soviets hoping to
accrue enough VPs by destroying enemy units. Risky. |
|
7th July 1943 |
Meeting Engagement Germany v USSR Complexity: 3 |
Best played against Soviet
AI. It's difficult to reproduce the fog bound set up from the original
scenario, so I haven't tried. The Soviets are mostly positioned in woods,
buildings and behind hills. The Germans must advance quickly to capture the
victory objectives, but not so much so that they take heavy casualties from
the lurking Soviet armour. |
|
Summer 1943 |
Bridgehead USSR v Germany Complexity: 4 |
Best played against Soviet
AI. The Germans are dug in but the Soviets have plenty of artillery with
which to batter them into submission. The Germans may be reinforced by a
Tiger company but shouldn’t count on it. This scenario is a bit of a slogging
match for both sides. |
|
Summer 1943 |
River crossing USSR v Germany Complexity: 4 |
Same forces as v1 but with
the victory objectives relocated to the centre of the map. |
|
Summer 1943 |
River crossing USSR v Germany Complexity: 4 |
Again, same forces as v1
but this time the victory objectives are in the NE section of the map. |
|
July 1943 |
Armoured Breakthrough Germany v USSR Complexity: 4 |
Best played against German
AI. This is a full on assault by massed German tank forces. The Soviets do
get tank reinforcements but initially have to rely on infantry, AT and
artillery units to slow the Germans down. |
|
Winter 1942 |
Recon Attack Germany v USSR Complexity: 4 |
A German recon battalion
finds several towns held by Soviet tank units. Both sides quickly pour
reinforcements into the area and a mobile battle develops ranging all over
the map. |
|
Winter 1942 |
Static Line Defence USSR v Germany Complexity: 5 |
Best played against Soviet
AI. It's KV hell for the Germans again as the Soviet behemoths attack their
lines with infantry in support. The Germans do get reinforcements, but will
they be enough to stop the Soviet rampage? |
|
Summer 1942 |
Static Line Defence USSR v Germany Complexity: 5 |
Best played against Soviet
AI. This a mass charge by Soviet infantry with some tanks and artillery in
support. |
