Side by Side Comparisons
Original WW2 Italian Camo
Post War Italian Camo
In the above fotos you can plainly see the color differences between WW2 manufactured Italian camouflage and post war.  While both groups show color variations, the WW2 examples have more consistant darker coloring.  The browns are browner and never border on the rusty side.  The greens never have a blue or aqua hue.  Perhaps the the biggest difference between the two groups is in the material the pattern is printed on.  Original Italian camo was printed on a course weave fabric while the post war camouflage was printed on a much tighter weave cloth.  The post war fabric depends on this tight weave to maintain water repellency.  The WW2 era fabric becomes extremely stiff when immersed in water.  The fabric seems to swell and become more dense when wet!  The WW2 era fabric also tends to fade more easily and more consistantly than its post war counter part.  Instead of the greens turning bluer, the WW2 era colors tend to fade to a white or grey.  On some extremely faded examples, it may be nearly impossible to distinguish a camo pattern at all. (see clothing page for a very worn example)     .
Orig. #2 & Post War #3
Orig. #2 & Post War #1
The above comparisons were both made using Original example #2.   I wanted to compare the colors of the post war camo to a slightly worn original example and not an unissued example like Orig. #1 or Orig. #6.  I picked Orig. #2 since its brown has faded slightly and tended to match the browns in both PW #1 & PW #3.  While the browns are similar, the other colors are not.  Note how much darker the other colors in Orig. #2 as compared to the colors in PW #1 & PW #3.  While the fabric in PW #1 is very course as in all 15 original examples in my collection the colors are still not as dark .  As stated earlier, PW #1 may be a very late war example or very early post war example based on the fabric used.
