Ideas For Helping Your Child At Home
Links
1. Help your child get organized:
- Provide a quiet place to work equipped with necessary supplies
- Set a homework time, but be flexible
- Practice night before preparation: having bookbag, lunch money,
signed notes, etc. all ready to go and placed in a regular spot
- Check assignments nightly and sign on the weekend
- Check your child's 8 pocket folder and bookbag every weekend
for items that should be pulled out (your child should check
   first)

2. Help develop good reading and listening skills:
- Let your child see you reading (be a good model)
- Keep children's reading material around the house
- Reward your child for reading if he needs added motivation
- Explore your public library
- Have your child read to you and read to your child from a variety
of sources; if it's a story, discuss the characters and events

3. Talk with your child about everything:
- Encourage your child to put his thoughts and opinions into
  words
- Discuss current events locally, nationally, and internationally
- Ask about what is going on at school and what your child is
  learning
If s/he says "nothing," pose specific questions (look at the back
of his assignment sheet to see current units of study)

4. Encourage outside interests besides school, but see to it that your child doesn't become overloaded -- help your child set priorities and realistic expectations for himself.

5. Encourage good manners and getting along skills.

6. Help your child understand that learning is a lifelong process -- you are still learning new things regularly.
