Basking in the mid July weather (wind and rain), LSCC arrived at Priston in awe of the lovely, shiny, big cock to play a timed game against Priston CC. Surely Limpley Stoke wouldn’t spend 6 hours playing the match, only to get the opposition 9 wickets down and in sight of victory, only to draw the match, again!!!!! Gregory won the toss and elected to bat, Twist was out for a duck, adjudged LBW by the opposition’s umpire, which was a truly shockingly bad decision. Gregory joined Smith and the two then got the run scoring going in a nice little partnership taking the score towards 100 before Smith was bowled for 75 and Gregory was caught slashing a drive to point for 35. Owen came and went for 16, Richards A went for a duck, his third in a row and ringer Will also went for a duck to leave LSCC reeling. Richards S and Bush then carried the team home with an unbeaten partnership, with Bush especially brutal finishing on 65 not out and Richards S on 24 not out. LSCC finished with 223 and it was time for tea, and a very nice one at that. Priston’s innings got off to a solid start on a very morbid pitch as LSCC found life difficult. Twist and Hannell opened the bowling with an excellent spell and bowled tightly, but Gregory then hauled them off and both bowlers patience was seen to wear increasingly thin with the ever more misguided captain. Teachers pet Bush and Tyrie replaced the openers but neither could dislodge the openers and Tyrie was next in the firing line of Captain Gregory as he was hauled off to be replaced by a ten year old (who incidentally bowled very well, please take note Martin how he pitched the ball up). Eventually LSCC made a breakthrough when Captain Gregory brought himself on, he bowled one of the openers round his legs, it was noted during the celebration of the first wicket how neither Twist, Hannell nor Tyrie joined the team to celebrate, all three still fuming at their captain. Gregory then took further wickets with double bouncing deliveries as LSCC sniffed a possible victory and the return of Hannell then reduced Priston to 8 wickets down with two overs to go. After capturing 5 wickets Gregory was replaced by All American Bush who captured a wicket straight away leaving LSCC just one wicket away from victory and three balls later got the batsmen to sky a catch to mid on. Tyrie M was under the catch and was about to take it when he violently jumped to his left and then dived back in vain to catch the ball, it dropped to the fall and LSCC’s chance of victory slipped away, match drawn. Gregory now without a win in a month has pressure mounting from all sides as many of the senior players are beginning to round on him. How he will cope with the pressure? Probably dress up as a Wurzel and go to Hungary, as his mental state is further questioned. Nick Twist |
