It was Saturday and Limpley Stoke was playing, that could mean only one thing. A cricketing double header. After ground cancellations and severe criticism directed towards the fixture secretary because fixture congestion and concerns growing over injuries, the match went ahead on a wind swept Odd Down in usual Odd Down conditions. The touring team, from St Albans, were St Johns Something-or-other and arrived in shiny cars and cleaned, pressed kit which meant they were better than LSCC on captain Nick's scale of ability for cricket teams. So with this armed in his mind Gregory by-passed the toss and offered the opposition the chance to bat "to make a game of it" whilst reducing the game to 35 overs so a BBQ could be enjoyed afterwards. The pitch could only be described as a beastly brut which offered no certainty of bounce but offered plenty of danger to the batsmen. The ball was leaping off a length as Owen and Bush opened the bowling, both bowled well, but a little short at times (how many times have we heard that in reference to Martin Owen), Owen snared the first wicket with Twist taking a sublime catch at point. Hannell replaced Bush and bowled his wily spin for the first time in this season and was turning both ways whilst enjoying the lively bounce and when Tyrie joined him at the other end Limpley gained a vice like grip on the match with wickets falling regularly to both bowlers and the touring team really not getting to grips with the pitch. Gregory's captaincy was then astute, making some clever bowling changes to allow the St Albans side the chance to add a few more runs to their paltry total with the aim of making a game of it by bringing on some lesser bowlers. St Johns finished on 136, close to all out of their 35 overs. A brief tea was taken with the aim of a brisk turnaround but rain put pay to that delaying the game for 15-20 minutes. The game resumed with Smith and Twist aggressively going after the bowling, Twist was out caught for 18, Richards S and Hannell followed soon after. Smith and Richards A then took the game away from the opposition reaching 90 of just 15 overs with some sound batting. Smith then fell for 41 but Richards A saw LSCC home, by 5 wickets and plenty of overs to spare, with 42 not out. After the match Tom Hannell fired up the BBQ assisted by Simon Richards and provided quite a spread in some hostile weather conditions, the touring team didn't appreciate it but LSCC tucked in as ever to ensure none was wasted. A special mention goes to Mark Tyrie and Tom Hannell for introducing the nightclubbing world to a new line of fashion that is cricket casual which was seen on the dance floor of Poo Na Na in the early hours of Sunday morning. Questions should be asked why there were there in the first place at that time with an important match starting later that day. |
