It was sponsored by StuGov, and they asked for Phi Theta Kappa's help with this project. We had 6 members and officers who helped with setting up the tents, tables, games, taking pictures, the food, then with the event in progress, and finally the clean up after the party. It went from 11 a.m to 1:30 p.m., and everyone did a marvelous job! I want to impress upon our members that (1) you need to contact Kelly if you participated to get that done (2) that we, the officers, were proud of the job you did, and appreciated your hard work. Job well done by all!! The party consisted of 5 tents representing the world and how they dealt with the Christmas holiday season, which included the United States "Christmas",the African American tradition of " Kwanzaa", Israel's "Hanukah," China's "Chinese New Year," and Mexico. We had special guests in the form of Santa Claus, and Frosty the Snowman. Pictures were taken of the children who were not afraid of the big red guy, by Margaret's daughter. Who when not acting as photographer was getting busy with the line dancing that was going on! Several of us tried to get Margaret to join her, but she quickly shook her head stating there was no WAY she was going out there in front of everyone and dance! * chuckles* For the most part the kids were busy with games, crafts, and the balloons. They were covered in glitter, cookie crumbs, ink from the stamps, and grins that reached from ear to ear on all. They went around with little bags with their passports, got them stamped, learned about the holidays from each country, colored, made maps, crafts, and ran around in complete rapture at this fun event. So once more thanks to all those who were with us, and those who brought their families to enjoy the event, for it really was a great way to not only help Student Government, our families, but that of our college family and the community. A fun time was had by all!! Habitat Restore: This is the first time that we have worked with Habitat for Humanity, and we look forward to helping out such a great organization who does so much for our community. This event was set up by our very own wonderful Kim Jarquio. The date for this event will be January 24, 2004 at their Habitat Warehouse from 8:30 a.m. - 1 p.m.. For more information where this is located please contact Kim, as this is another great project idea from her, that she helped set up for all our members. If you can this would be a good indoor project during the cold. For those who don't have a calendar in front of them, this is a Saturday, so if you don't have work or classes please join us. KCPT telethon: This event was just so much fun, that if the opportunity arises again, I would highly recommend that you volunteer for this. There was 16 of us that attended this event, which included 2 guests, that Margaret and Kim brought with them. In the studio they had a guest, who was the lead singer of Styx named Dennis DeYoung. What a marvelously funny gentleman, who kept not only the audience entertained with his singing voice, and his jokes during the interview, but he also spent time entertaining "us" while we were between phone calls. Annie and Margaret seemed to be very popular with the viewers and received lots of phone calls. I can't say if they were all donations, friends, or just heavy breathers. * laughs * I believe we did fairly well from what I saw on the tote board, the donations for that night was over $15,000 thanks to the generous viewers of Public Television. Again I can't stress how much fun this was for us, and I for one am a firm believer in Public Television programming. It was a pleasure to help them keep such good quality programming out there for our children and that of our community. Thank you for all that attended and who made the evening such a wonderful success! |
