Week 8
Playoff Bound
A little anticlimactic for a much anticipated regular season finale.  But the playoff teams have been determined nonetheless

The Good Division
Unpredictably, one long win streak ends and another begins.  With an overpowering 16 game win streak (which is still going on) the Spanish Harlem Pinata Beaters vaulted themselves to a division crown by a modest 5 games.  For the week, the Beaters went 17-1 and are now inarguably the team to beat heading into the playoffs.

The Bad Division

The good news for the rest of the league is that Lake Placid missed the playoffs.  After another great week  (11-4), the Miracles ended up just 2 games out of the division lead.  Boro Intoxicated held on after an 8-10 week and appear to be struggling as they enter the playoffs.  Wrigleyville also finished 2 games back after winning 9 of their last 16.

The Ugly Division

An above .500 week by Pittsburgh marked the first time in ATB history that no human team finished below .500.  The Pulverizers went 8-7 and finished the season 81-81.  The Springfield Isotopes extended their 18-game win streak 1 game and went 10-6 the rest of the way.  They walked away with the division by 15 games as Limerick went 9-9 to finish the season 6 games above .500.

The Wild Card
The Cooperstown Nationals closed the gap to just one game as late as 10/13 (Season ended 10/20), but the New Delhi Llamas were just too strong.  The Llamas went 10-5, and the Nationals 10-6, which resulted in a 2 game margin of victory.  The next closest team was Wrigleyville, 15 games out.

Old Hoss Radbourn (IH) 3-0. 0.36 ERA, 25 IP, 14 H, 6 BB, 28 K

The Playoffs
Boro Intoxicated Cowtippers (93-69) @ Spanish Harlem Piata Beaters (113-49)
New Delhi Llamas (106-56) @ Springfield Isotopes (99-66)

The first round playoffs will be simulated on an every-other-day basis, 2 games at a time per series.  Kind of.  I want to start the first 2 games on Tuesday, and then simulate the next two on Thursday.  Skip the weekend, and start on Monday the following week.  Exception I have night classes two nights a week so if I cant get to the games, I apologize.  I will tell you up front that there is a decent possibility of simming the games next week on Tuesday and Friday (vs. Tuesday and Thursday)

There will be much more to come in the next couple of days including regular season awards (Cy Young, MVP, Hitter of the Year, Silver Sluggers, Gold Gloves, and more) and playoff previews.

MVP

Ted Williams wins the ATB III MVP Award.  It was a tough choice between him and Babe Ruth, although not that tough.

Ted Williams was an absolute monster in the second half of season and the Beaters started to play extremely well when Williams was playing extremely well.  Remember, for a while the Beaters where mired in third place until Teddy Ballgame woke up.

Lets compare his numbers to Ruths for the second half of the season

                        Williams                    Ruth
BA                     .412                        .317
OBA                  .539                        .503
SLG                   .933                        .731
OPS                   1.472                      1.234
HR                       43                          23
R                         91                           64
RBI                     116                          56

Do you want more proof he is the most deserving?  Take a look at his second half overall rankings in the same categories:

BA       2nd
OBA     1st
SLG     1st
OPS     1st
HR       1st
R          1st
RBI       1st (by a margin of 34!)

What else can I say: The Splendid Splinter won Player of the Week honors 3 times, no one else won it more than once.  He had 5 days of 5+ RBI.  He led the league in both Runs and RBIs.  Finally, since the MVP award has to do with how valuable a person is to his team, Mr. Williams he led the Beaters in:

Cy Young

Old Hoss Radbourn gets the call here.  This was a very difficult decision, and it came down to determining which is more valuable better stats or more innings pitched.  Guy Hecker had 33 wins and 464 IP compared to Radbourns 20 wins and 265 IP.  But, I figured I could not penalize someone because a coach decided on a 4-man rotation instead of a 5-man.

True pitching ability stats yield the following results:

                    Radbourn           Hecker
ERA                2.30                  2.50
CG                   16                    19                      (In 27 less starts)
SHO                  5                      6                       (In 27 less starts)
WHIP             1.048                1.022
K/9                  8.3                    8.2
OOBA             .201                  .224                    (Opponents Batting Average)
QS%               .727                  .667                   (Quality Start %)

So, as you can see Radbourn was actually the better pitcher, he just didnt pitch as many innings.

Rolaids Relief

This one is so obvious; I will not spend any time explaining my reasoning.  Dennis Eckersley dominated just about everyone he faced this year.

Hitter of the Year
Babe Ruth had an OPS 100 points higher than everyone else, hit 57 doubles, 10 triples, and 53 Home Runs.  And this was on an OK team that helped keep down his RBI and Runs Scored numbers.
