Pre-Series Analysis
Batting Comparison

Pitching Comparison

Comish's Prediction: The Beaters have logged 108 innings pitched versues the leagues top pitchers this year - Guy Hecker, Larry Corcoran, George Bradley, Tommy Bond, Tim Keefe, Old Hoss Radbourn, Dutch Leonard, Pud Galvin, and Pedro Martinez.  Their combined ERA against the most powerful offensive team in the league is 3.25.  That is excellent and leads me to believe that good pitching can beat the Beaters.

As for the Isotopes big man, George Bradley has only 1 start, an 8 inning 1 run gem, and I look for him to continue his dominance and perhaps start 3 times this series.

Finally, let's not overlook the Isotope offense.  They were 5th overall in runs scored and only have 6 less home runs than the Beaters.  They can score runs too.

Look for the Isotopes to win a close 7 game series with run scoring on the lesser side.

Who Really Had the Best Team in ATB III?
As is customary (at least for the past two years!) at the end of each season, I run 5-10 additional quick-sims to see if the most deserving team actually took home the money. This year I ran a full 10 seasons and kept the individual season records intact so you can view them.

The Divisional alignments for the quick-sims are not the same as they were in the true ATB III seasons.  They were determined as I felt most fair.  Basically I broke up the Good Division so the Llamas, Nationals, and Beaters were separated.  Additionally, I eliminated a couple of computer teams in order to make a balanced schedule.  So each team had the same number of games against each other.

The findings?  Make no mistake about it Justin Petronzis 2001-2002 Spanish Harlem Pinata Beaters are the best team to ever play ATB.  Period.  In the 10 seasons the Beaters made a World Series appearance an astounding 9 times!  9 out 10!  That is simply amazing.  The Beaters were the only team to make the playoffs each and every year.  Additionally, they had best overall record by over 100 more wins than the next closest team!  That averages to over a 10 game margin each season.  And remember, dont look at that statistic as the Beaters were 10 games better than the second place team in their division, they averaged 10 games better than the second best team in the entire league each year.

More proof?  The Beaters topped 110 wins in 6 of the 10 quick-sims and half the time they had at least 115 wins.  Their best record was 120-42!  Overall, their winning percentage over 1620 games was .688.  Great job JP.

The only knock on the Beaters is that they only won 3 of the 9 World Series that they appeared in.  That isnt too hot, but still good enough to tie for the most World Series wins.  The Nationals also won 3 World Series (out of 5 appearances). To round out the Championship wins the Llamas and Isotopes both have 2 (of 3 appearances each) victories under their belt.

4 of the 9 human teams have World Series victories.  I suspect that might be a low percentage, but probably not too low.  If one more team wins the series, the percentage jumps over half.  Not too bad right?

Wrong.  Taking a closer look, these four teams are the only one to even have an opportunity to win a Series.  No team besides the Big Four (Llamas, Nationals, Beaters, Isotopes) even made it to the show.  I was a little surprised by this only because the true ATB III seemed to be very competitive.

On the other end of the spectrum Sean Seeleys Pittsburgh Pulverizers were the only team to not make the playoffs.  They topped out at 89 wins twice and averaged 84 wins over the course of the study.  Below is the average number of wins for each of us:

111 Beaters
101 Llamas
98 Nationals
96 Cowtippers
95 Miracles
94 Isotopes
91 Guzzlers
88 Bums
84 Pulverizers
