  • Peakman Name History and Coat of Arms

The English family name Peakman is classified as being of habitation origin. The phrase "habitation names" is used to describe those family names which find their origins in the location of the residence of the initial bearer. In some instances, such names are derived from the name of the town or region where the original bearer lived or resided. Others refer to the geographic location of the original bearer's home while still others may refer to a sign displayed over the door of his residence. With regard to the family name Peakman, it is derived from the old English word "peac" meaning "peak, pointed hill" and "man" denoting "one who lived by a pointed hill or came from the Peak district in Derbyshire".

As I understand it now, our Peakman name came from the name Pakeman. That is as it would appear on paper. My best guess however is that the scribes who recorded events of births, deaths and marriages, recorded names as they "saw fit". Example of this is; our ancestor John Pakeman was the father of Charles Peakman.

Gold/Yellow is the Symbol of generosity & the elevation of the mind. The 3 Martlets on the shield show that the Coat of Arms was created by the fourth son, one who has had to subsist by virtue & merit, not inheritance.Another example of a Peakman Coat of Arms about which a cousin of ours Mike Peakman comments, "Interestingly, the Coat of Arms is certainly less than 200 years old, so if the above is all true, then Charles, son of Thomas must have commissioned the arms". Comment by Mike Peakman.
To my knowledge we Peakmans are not entitled and have no eligibility to the use of either of the coats of arms displayed on this page.

Spelling variations of this family name include: MacPeake, Peak, Peake and others.

First found in Denbighshire where they were seated from very early times and were granted lands by Duke William of Normandy, their liege Lord, for their distinguished assistance at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Robert Peake who settled in Virginia in 1623; Mathew Peake settled in Virginia in 1636; Mary Peake and her husband settled in Boston in 1636; Martha Peak settled in Virginia in 1698.

    Just a Note

The Peakman website was the first I ever attempted and was to be the pivot for any other genealogy sites that I might decide to attempt.

It has worked out this way, and the genealogies have grown wings.

The web has allowed for huge interaction and as a result much of the information is gained from other family members far and wide.

The genealogy database is a collection of the information on all the sites. It is comprehensive and worth a look.
