A political party is a group of persons who seek to control government throught the winning of elections and the holding of public office. It is clear that political parties are essential to to a democratic government. Parties are the mechanisms behind development of policy leadership choices; they are the medium through which those options are presented to the people.
The major function of a political party is to nominate candidates for public office. Then parties work to help their candidates win such elections. Parties inform the people, inspire and activate their interest and participation in public affairs. Each party tries to inform the people how it thinks it should be informed. This is conducted through pamphlets, signs buttons, and stickers; with advertisements in newspapers, magazines and on the radio, televisions and the Internet; in speeches, rallies, conventions; and in many other ways.
