'That evening, he [Blakeney] should have undergone the inevitable and usually extremely unpleasant initiation at the hands of his elders, but, deeming that a policy of aggression was to be preferred to one of passivity, he came to the conclusion that it would be better to pick a quarrel than to have one forced upon him. He therefore strode up to Bathurst, the biggest and most powerful in the room, and scrutinized the latter's clothes in obvious and undisguised scorn. "What a disgusting fit!" he said coolly. "Really, Bathurst, you must permit me to introduce you to my tailor. Just look at that demmed seam." ' - The Life and Exploits of the Scarlet Pimpernel (Part One, Chapter II)

Personal History:
Bathurst was born the second son to the second Earl of Bathurst on 22 May, 1767. He was sent to Harrows at the age of eleven to receive his education, which is where he met Fanshaw, Hastings, Mackensie, and a few others of the future League of the Scarlet Pimpernel. After he finished at Harrows he was sent to study aboard, touring Germany Austria, France, and Spain, accompanied by an old school friend, Gregory Holte. While in Spain in the summer of 1888, Bathurst summoned back to England to bear witness to his brother, Leopold's, imminent death (due to syphilis). After his brother's death, Bathurst stepped into his brother's role as the inheritor of his father's titles and lands. Some months later, the family was rocked again as Bathurst's youngest sister Elizabeth, a wild, spontaneous, care-free girl, eloped with his friend and former travelling companion, Holte - who would have been considered an unsuitable match otherwise. A good deal of the blame was laid to rest on Bathurst for introducing the pair. Perhaps this is why he is so sensitive to betrayal.
Bathurst is charming and very skilled in the art of chatting with the ladies and he is a highly promising marriage prospect, he has, as yet been unlucky when it come to finding a future wife. And though usually very friendly and amiable, Bathurst is very quick to believe that others are working against him, especially when it comes to the ladies. This makes being a friend of Bathurst's a potentially difficult job.
