If we look back in history France played a mayor part to create the world we live in today. The French Revolution in 1789-1801 was one of the defining moments in world history. The French philosophers and thinkers had a mayor influence on the European thinking of today. The French are well known for their individuality, independent thinking, food, wine, and of course the French way of life. The French rebelled against their king, against God and today France is recognised in the Christian world as one of the leased evangelised countries in the world. As part of the European Union the French on the one side want to protect their way of life but also want to benefits by being part of the European Union.
The French language is spoken in many parts of the world including Europe, Africa, Canada and many Islands like Mauritius, Madagascar etc. French is recognised as the second official world language and in 18 African countries French is the official language. According to one source more than 254 million people are living in these African countries. Countries like Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Gabon, Guinea, Ivory Coast, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Rwanda, Senegal, Togo, Algeria, Tunesia and Morrocco.
More than 60 million people live in France but many areas have no Christian witness. According to one source of the 38 000 communes, around 35 000 have no evangelical witness. More than 80% of the French have never touched a bible and 5% owns a bible. France can be described as one of the spiritual poorest countries in the world. With the massive secularism of society it is hard to be a Christian in France. Compare France today with France during the Protestant Reformation when more than 40% of the population at one time were protestant. The brutal persecution of the Huguenots in the 16 th and 17 th Centuries let to the loss of a big part of the French population. Today only 1.6% of the population of France can be classified as protestant.
