Definition of Terms
Accomplishment- The feeling you get after doing something helpful for others. Often involves communication, teamwork and a great feeling inside your stomach and in your heart. Example: Painting Loretta's house, screening Miss Elizabeth's porch, tutoring children, or working together as a team to reach a common goal.
Angel oak- A 1400 year old oak tree in South Carolina. Named after it's original owners. Symbol of stability, strength and persistence. Creates an inner sense of peace and tranquility, a respect for nature, as well as a realization of our small part in the world. Also the nickname of one of our stable comrades.
Beach- A place not much time was spent at, but beautiful nonetheless. Discovery and wonder often occurs. Sometimes you find sand dollars, and then realize that it is still alive.
Bowling- Common form of recreation in the United States. Getting free bowling passes for doing the YMCA in the middle of the alley, meeting random Cornell people in the next lane while in South Carolina, all associated with bowling.
Chitlins- an endearing term given by Sage and Wisdom to the younger women in the traveling entourage. Often used in conjunction with "Lock and Load chitlins." Or, used to round everyone up, "Let's go chitlins!"
Community- What you feel after spending a week with 12 other women in close quarters. Making dinner for each other, creating nicknames and giving each other hugs are necessary to maintain community.
Complete- Feeling whole and sure about something. For example, that at ease feeling you get when you finish a final.
Chicken nazi- Endearing term for those making a chicken dinner. Used in a loving, but teasing tone.
Do you have any idea how much pasta I consumed?- Comment made by yours truly in a nice restaurant in Georgetown after eating the entire restaurants supply of pasta. Followed by much laughter from my companions, and a confused smile from me.
Hugs- A basic human need. Necesary for proper functioning, best when had at least 3 times a day. Especially beneficial when given by children.
Journey- Process of discovery, travel and understanding. Moving from one place to another. For me, growing and developing into a more open and educated woman. Realizing that we don't all start from the same point in life, and accepting this.
Left Hand Column- During normal thought process, the thoughts that are kept to oneself for reasons of tact. Used in expressing ones conflict with another person, mediated by wisdom and sage. Helps ease tension, (forming, storming, norming, performing.) Sometimes makes dinner time into a Jerry Springer show.
