SETTING YOUR NEEDLES DOWN in the middle of a row

Sometimes when we're knitting we get interrupted, much as we may wish the world would just stop for a while so we could knit in peace. When you need to put down your knitting in the middle of a row, there are things that you can do to help ensure that you won't lose any stitches and that you'll be able to resume easily.

First, before you put your knitting down, bring both needles together, so that points are together and ends are together.

Next grab the knitting on the needles and gently slide all stitches away from the points. This will help prevent stitches from slipping off of the points and becoming dropped while you aren't holding the needles.

Then lay down the needles. For a few dollars you can also purchase rubber needle tips, which both shield the ends of the needles from poking holes in, for example, a carry bag, and also prevent stitches from slipping off of the needle points.

When you pick up your knitting, you may momentarily become confused which needle is the left hand needle and which is the right hand needle, because there are stitches on both. In this case, the needle with the ball yarn coming off of it is always the right hand needle.
