problem. Read on. It is believed that the first Flowerhorn hybrid was produced by a Penang based company in Malaysia somewhere in 1996, 1997. The company name is Mermaid Fish Farm, established by a group of fish hobbyists; among them four are experienced and professional fish researchers. After nine years of researching, through the artificial breeding of South America Cichlidae (Cichlasoma), the founder of Mermaid Fish Farm, Mr. Y.C.Cheah has successfully cross-bred an entirely new series of Cichlidae species, called - Mermaid (Known as Flowerhorn today). One of the reasons for the tremendous success of this hybrid cichlid is the ease of handling it. Just like its counterpart, arowana fish, Flowerhorn grow very fast. Flowerhorn even grow faster than arowana fish. With it pearls and black marking on its body, it bring a great sense of accomplishment to it's owner. Compared with other tropical fishes, Flowerhorn rarely fall sick and it is not hard to breed either. Dubbed as the next feng shui fish for the next feng shui cycle (which begins in year 2004) and by looking to the future of Flowerhorn, the potential of the Flowerhorn will still grow as this fish is constantly undergoing transformation creating more exciting varieties coming into the market.
