This Exxon on Shaw Road was an interesting, low glare design. I expected to get fairly low meter reading but found that the station had lots of light - 42.5 ft candles max and 14.5 ft candles min. I estimated the average to be about 24-25 ft candles (over twice the IESNA recommendation). The reason that the station was not offensive is that Exxon used fixtures that were square and deep. The bulb was recessed inside the fixture and was not directly visible to the eye. Hence the low glare, trespass, and light pollution. As you can tell from the photo, the even illumination makes it easy to get a good picture. This Exxon is a bit brighter than necessary, but acceptable. The Mobil at South Riding had similar light meter readings but had inferior fixtures and much more direct glare. |
