New York City Trip
Each year the Fifth Grade students from Lothrop Elementary School visit New York City for a few days.  They visit their pen pals at P.S. 173 in Flushing Meadows, Queens New York and get a real taste of city life.  Their pen pals at P.S. 173 also read Letters from Rifka and focus on the theme of immigration.

This year (May 29-30, 2001) both schools met at the Statue of Liberty and then traveled to Ellis Island together. In addition to a school visit of P.S. 173, Lothrop students had the opportunity to eat at an authentic Chinese Restaurant in Flushing Queens and also visit a Buddhist Temple.

Other activities during the trip included:  visiting the Museum of Natural History, viewing the musical
42nd Street on Broadway, and eating an Italian feast at John's Pizza.  John's Pizza is an Italian restaurant located in an old church with beautiful stained glass windows and magnificent sketches of Manhattan.

Let's look at some pictures below and take a "virtual" trip with us to New York City!
Looking up from the base of the Statue of Liberty.  The points on her crown represent the seven continents and seas.  The book that she holds is dated July 4, 1776 representing our freedom from Great Britain.  Her torch lights the way to "freedom" and is a famous symbol of freedom for immigrants who arrived by boat from Europe during the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Did you know that she was a gift from the government in France and before she came to the United States France was thinking about placing her at the base of the Suez Canal in Egypt?

Did you know that there are other symbols that the Statue exhibits?  Go to the
Photo Tour of the Statue of Liberty to learn more about her.
