Our visit also included a ferry ride to Ellis Island where students learned about immigration then and now. Between the late 1800s to the mid 1900s most immigrants traveled by boat. Over 12 million immigrants passed through Ellis Island. Did you know that 1/3 of those immigrants settled in New York City, while 2/3 traveled to other places in the United States to settle.
Most immigrants on the East Coast of the United States were from Europe. Some students on our trip found their grandparents' and great grandparents' names on the wall that surrounds the main building at Ellis Island. |
