lovett in addition to engraving the obverse and
reverse confederate sides, saw fit to put into
his coins the L, for lovett. A and M for his wife.
"AMANDA M. LOVETT", little known the AML, appearing
over and over again,
in the very texture of coin itsself.
The L is known, to verify by lovett, the ALM must be present.
THIS TRADEMARK, THE L, IS PRESENT ON ALL HIS WORKS.
THE 1861 PENNY, THE 1861 QUARTER, THE 1861 HALF DOLLAR,
MADE BY LOVETT.
Identified by the L initial on the reverse.
Lovett was approached, when the cents appeared,
the l is his tradenark>
They reconized his work, at first he denied
any knowledge of such pieces.
The head copied from a picture in his store
The same head on pennies and quarters,
When he was confronted with the Penny,
he then admitted that he had made them,
Later hiding them fearful of the consequences.
He stating they were ordered in 1861 by csa,
" and they were sent with dies,"
NOT just pennies, BUT quarters and halfs,
Logic demands quarters and halfs, to help with paper crunch
just pennies would be a waste of time.
I believe pennies were done last, not enough time to dispose of them.
ANOTHER UNDISPUTABLE PROOF THAT LOVETT MADE MINE,
HALF DOLLARS, AS WELL AS THE PENNY AND QUARTER
IS HIS F AND E LETTERS IN HIS ENGRAVINGS AS PROOF.
EVIDENT IN THESE COINS,
F LIKE P, AND E LIKE B.
But the CSA did manage to mint a few coins.
In 1861, Mr. Robert Lovett Jr. of Philadelphia was
commissioned BY BAILEY to design,
engrave, and make pieces for the Confederacy.
He used the Liberty Head
for the obverse of the penny, AND QUARTER.
Using nickel and copper, he made a few samples.
Confederate Half Dollars were struck at New Orleans in 1861,
from REVISED lovett dies, finalized by Peterson,
The south before the war relied on the mint in phil. for their dies
then Peterson, at new orleans received from northern minter bailey.
added a T for taylor, M for Memmenger.
from the dies sent by Lovett.
As the Civil War continued, the cost of the war loomed large.
Any precious metals available in the South often made their way
to Europe to procure war goods.New orleans port used.
lovett fearing prosecution for aiding the enemy,
stopped his work, and hid the penny coins and dies in his cellar.
QUARTERS AND HALF DOLLARS WERE SHIPPED TO NEW ORLEANS.
Penny dies were purchased later and used to make restrikes.
perhaps not enough time to ship pennies, with quarters and halfs.
QUARTER DIES AND HALF DOLLAR NEVER FOUND.
UNTIL NOW, MY HALF.
