Welcome to the
Sheridan Family History

This Sheridan site has been published for those who are searching their Sheridan roots. It is in no way meant to disenfranchise any person/persons from their familial links, rather to unite those with links in common. This Sheridan family is small, and of many and varied parts. Like their Sheridan ancestors, they too are travelers, innovators, searchers. I hope fellow researchers find this Sheridan site helpful.

our sheridan heritage

Our grandparents; John Joseph and Evelyn Joyce Sheridan.

We are the descendants of John Joseph Sheridan and Evelyn Joyce Sheridan nee Scott. John Joseph Sheridan is the son of Phillip Sheridan, and is of Irish descent. Read on
Our grand-mother Evelyn Joyce Sheridan, sadly passed on early in our lives, but this is as our mother remembers her, "I love and miss this lady still. She was the very best mother-in-law a girl could ever want. A great Mum and grand mother and and one of the very best people I have had the privilege to know!"
Born Evelyn Joyce Scott, she spent her early days in the Auckland area around St. Helliers, then to Wairoa later on after having married John Joseph Sheridan. Although of Irish descent, this Sheridan family lives in NZ. Alex Sheridan is the son of John Joseph Sheridan and Evelyn Joyce Sheridan. This is his story, a part of the Sheridan family history.

Who's Who?

We are a small but strong family, living in the Manawatu province, the Wairoa district and on the Gold Coast, Australia. Father is a farmer. Two Sheridan daughters are degreed school teachers, and sons are in security. NZ is a better country for having them in it. The youngest members of the Sheridan clan are beautiful. Although we live in different parts of the country/globe, we see each other often, nearly always during holidays.

About Us

The early years of this family were spent in and around the Hunterville, Taihape area. About six
years at Lake Rotoma, and then teenage years at Whakaki. All five members of the Sheridan family
attended St. Joseph's first and then Wairoa College. All left Wairoa College bound for higher education. One of our number is serving in Afghanistan at the moment. We have many Sheridan cousins out there. This is an invitation to add your genealogy to ours, or if you would prefer your own site, we could link to yours and vice versa. Us four Sheridans have two younger brothers and they can be found here.

Our Hobbies

Our hobbies are numerous. We love to play games when we are together, scrabble, monopoly and balderdash. We play and watch sport, of course netball and rugby being the main ones, but we enjoy touch rugby and league as well. A family that plays together stays together is our motto. Deer hunting and dog trialing are two important hobbies of the menfolk.
We are a spiritual family and often pray together and for each other when apart.
We are awfully proud of each other and love being together

All the following links are part of this genealogy ring. The genealogies have been compiled with attention to detail, however errors do occur. I hope the genealogies herein are of use to someone searching for their family ties.

Whakaki - Whakaki is a small village in New Zealand. A typical study of hapu/subtribes and descent lines. This site attempts to illustrate this.

John Hook - John Hook was also known as Jack Hook, Flash Jack,Tieki Huka, Flashy Jack, Captain Hook and Black Jack. John Hook was born in England in 1810 and died at The Spit, Ahuriri, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand in 1870 John Hook came to Mahia, Te Hoe, as a whaler.

Sheridan Family - This Sheridan family is small, and of many and varied parts. Like their
Sheridan ancestors, they too are travelers, innovators, searchers.
I hope fellow researchers find this Sheridan site helpful.

Solomon Family - This site is about the Solomon and/or Taruna family. This Solomon name is not to be confused with other Solomons. The Solomon name in regards to this family is a young one and is only a few generations old. The name was adopted from the Maori name Horomona Taruna, and transliterated from Horomona to the English name Solomon.

Hachem Smith - This site is dedicated to our ancestors Hachem Johann Schmidt or John Smith or John Mete, and his wife Tauarai Parapara Kurekure TeMau Smith. The recantation of these genealogies allows us to remember these ancestors and to celebrate our own birth. “Ma te Atua tieke mo ake ake ake tonu atu.”

Peter Smith - Peter Smith, son of Hachem and Tauarai Smith,  married Emma Harete Ellis, the daughter of Captain James Ellis aka William Ellis and Taupeka of Opotiki. Peter Smith and his wife Emma had 12 children.

May Thorpe - Born Maye Thorpe, daughter of Peti Pirihi and Arthur Thorpe or Topi, she married Mathew Smith or Matiu Porou Smith, g'son of Hachem Smith and Tauarai. Our grandparents had 16 children.

McAneny - The descendants of Catherine and Patrick McAneny are numerous. This site is a comprehensive look at the descendants and ancestry of this couple. The name McAneny  takes on various forms through the years. From the research carried out on this particular family, it would appear that the patriarch, Patrick McAneny was illiterate and totally reliant on others when it came to spelling and writing his name. Thus the name McAneny has many spellings.

Genealogy Database - Take a look at this database. It has Kahungunu genealogies and many others. It is a comprehensive view of lineages mentioned above as well as their families.
