Front Page '98 -- The Basics

Open the Front Page Editor:

1.                  From your Windows '95 Desktop, if you don't have a shortcut to Front Page Editor, go to Start, Programs, Microsoft Front Page.  (If you have a shortcut to the Editor, double click on it.)  If you're using School Vista, find the book that contains Microsoft Front Page and double click to open the program.

2.                  If  Front Page Explorer opens the Getting Started dialog box, click Cancel.

3.                  Click Tools on the menu bar (if you're in Front Page Explorer), then click Show Front Page Editor.

4.                  If your computer had a shortcut to Front Page Editor or School Vista took you directly to the Editor, then you're ready to begin.

  Start Creating Your Web Page:

1.                  Enter your title.

2.                  Enter your text and/or

3.                  Bring in text written in Microsoft Word or another program.

a)      Click Insert, File. (Where it says Files of Type, click All Files.)  Double click the file you'd like to insert.  Front Page will convert your text to html.

b)      You may have to adjust spacing by deleting double spaces and replacing them with single spaces by holding the SHIFT key when you hit the ENTER key.

4.                  Format your title and text (center title, choose fonts, colors, sizes, etc.)  Text color palate is on toolbar next to U.

5.                  Choose a background image or color (Format, Background, click the box next to Background Image.  Click Browse).  Choose the file you wish to use as your background (usually .gif or .jpg although most graphics files can be used as backgrounds.)  [If using background images from the web, be sure to save them in the same folder as the web pages you are creating now.] or you can use a Theme.

a)      To use one of Front Page's many Themes (themes include background colors as well as font colors, custom buttons, etc.), click Format, Theme.

b)      In the Choose Theme dialog box, click the box next to Use Selected Theme.

c)      Scroll through the themes and choose the one you want to use.  If you don't find a theme you like, go back to step 4.

d)      If you choose a theme and want to undo it, click Format, Theme.

e)      In the Choose Theme dialog box, click the box next to This Page does not use Themes.

6.                  Insert pictures into your web page.

a)      Insert, Image.  Then choose the image file.

b)      Insert, Clipart.  Then choose the clipart you'd like to use.

7.                  Create Links:

a)      Type the name of your link.

b)      Highlight it.

c)      Click the Insert Hyperlink button or click Insert, Hyperlink.

d)      You now have several choices:

·        In the blank space next to URL: type in the web site address or name of the web page you want to link to or

·        Click the first button to the right of the box  to use your web browser to select a web page or file or

·        Click the next button to make a hyperlink to a file (a web page that you've already created) on your computer or

·        Click the third button to make a hyperlink that sends email or

·        Click on the last button to create a page and link to the new page

8.                  To create a Link to another part of a web page that you have created (a bookmark):

a)      Decide where you would like to link to

b)      Highlight the first word of that section

c)      Click Edit, Bookmark.

d)      Give the bookmark a name. Click OK.

e)      Type the name of your link.

f)        Highlight it.

g)      Click the Insert Hyperlink button or click Insert, Hyperlink.

h)      From the box next to the word Bookmark, choose the appropriate bookmark and click OK.

9.                  Create a table:

a)      Click Table, Insert Table.

b)      Specify the number of rows and columns (these can always be changed).

c)      Specify the style if you wish.

d)      Enter your information (use the TAB key to get around your table).

e)      To change font colors, highlight the text or cells and go to Format, Font and choose your color.

f)        Any other adjustments to your table should be done using the Table menu items.

g)      The table (or a part of the table) needs to be selected in order to use these menu items.

10.              Create Bullets:

a)      Click Format, Bullets and Numbering

b)      Use images from current theme or

c)      Specify image and Browse to choose your image file.

11.              Add a Timestamp:

a)      Click Insert, Timestamp

b)      Choose the Display and Date Format

c)      Click OK.

d)      You can write:  This page was last updated on … before the timestamp (on your web page) if you wish.
