![]() Lesson Plan: Social Studies in the Community
It is important for students to learn cooperation skills necessary to:
Students will learn about key leaders, offices, and jobs promoting community welfare. These will include mayor,police, firefighters, and emergency medical support, chamber of commerce, and other key figures and jobs that enhance entire community well-being. Students will research and put together either a Power Point or media presentation on their topic. Designed for middle schoolers in grades 6th-8th. The lesson covers topics in subjects such as social studies, civics, and technology. The teacher will divide the class into groups of 4. Each member of the group will cover a different aspect of their group's topic such as responsibilities, jurisdiction, agencies under the auspice of that office, and qualifications for the job. Students will visit the Space Science Group Web Site (see link below). Students will research how cooperation is necessary to survival and gather information and pictures for a Power Point Presentation. Pictures can be taken from the SSG's Web Site or from an Internet search engine for pictures, such as Altavista (see link below). Students can also gather information or pictures from any of the pages that are linked to the SSG's Web Site (they are listed at the bottom of the SSG's pages in red lettering). Students will compose a Power Point Presentation with 5-8 slides and at least 3 pictures or tape an interview with a person representing their topic and give oral reports on characteristics of that office. Students must include the addresses of all the sites that they used to gather information in their Power Point Presentation. Students will present their group project at conclusion of study. Teacher will evaluate Power Point Presentation or media interview and oral presentations to make sure they meet the requirements given. Teacher will also grade the Power Point on accuracy of presented material. | BR>
